2. Italy: our Country
Italy is a Parliamentary
Republic, the President is
Sergio Mattarella and Prime
Minister is Mario Draghi. The
capital is Rome. The
population is around 60 million
and the currency is Euro. The
official language is Italian, but
there are minor German,
French and Slovenian speaking
communities.
3. Italy is subdivided into 20 regions,
five of these regions have a special
autonomous status that enables
them to enact legislation on some of
their local matters. (Sicily is one of
these). The country is further
divided into 110 provinces and 8,100
municipalities.
Italy is also known by other names:
Bel Paese (beautiful country) and Lo

4. Sicily: our Region
Sicily is the largest of the Italian islands.
It is considered one of the pearls of
southern Italy for its beautiful coasts and
its magnificent volcano: Etna, which
offers breathtaking landscapes, protected
areas and natural parks. Sicilian
enormous and invaluable wealth is due
not only to the richness of monuments
and natural beauty, but also to its
gastronomic tradition, which has Greek,
Spanish, French and Arab influences.
5. Portopalo of Capo Passero: our Village
Portopalo of Capo Passero is a
town of just 3,600 inhabitants in the
province of Syracuse. Portopalo is 58
kilometers from Syracuse and is the
southernmost town in Sicily. Its
territory includes the Island of Capo
Passero a few tens of meters from the
mainland and the Correnti Island a
few kilometers away. Portopalo's
economy is strongly linked to the sea,
both because fishing is one of the
most important resources of the
residents and because summer
tourism is linked to the sea and the
beauty of its coast. In fact, in the
summer months the population
increases thanks to the tourists who
flock to this extraordinary and
fascinating landscape every year.
6. IC Pellico: our School
The "Silvio Pellico" middle school is
located in Portopalo Capo Passero, a
small seaside village. The school
includes kindergarten, elementary and
middle school. It has around 350 pupils,
some of whom come from various
foreign countries (Tunisia, Morocco,
Romania and Poland) and around 60
teachers and 27 employees.

Furthermore, the “Silvio Pellico”
school in Portopalo is also a music
school, pupils can choose to study 4
musical instruments: piano, guitar,
oboe and trumpet. To support
teaching, the school has an ICT
classroom, an art classroom, a
science laboratory, a library, 4 music
laboratories, a large indoor and
outdoor gymnasium and a lecture
hall. Students participate in various
national and international projects.
