CHARLES OMONDI
Chief Executive Officer
Nine One One Group Limited
In achieving this and to
continue remaining relevant, we
have in the past few years been
on a soul – searching journey of
internally evaluating how we do
business with a desire to institute
systems through which we could
gauge progress on structural
improvements while also
instituting a total paradigm shift
as we sought to attain world – class
operations.
Our decision to pursue ISO
9001:2008 Quality Management
System certification therefore was
natural progression for us to test
our systems against international
standards, exposing our business
operationstoexternalscrutinyand
in the process commit ourselves
to a continuous improvement
culture.
This process was arduous,
involving, and even emotive as
age – old beliefs were reevaluated
but thanks to the commitment
of a very vibrant team led
by our Quality Management
Representative, the Management
Committee, the BUREAU VERITAS
team and goodwill from all staff,
we did not falter in our steps. On
theoverallhowever,theexperience
was fulfilling, seeing the level
of engagement we all had as an
organization, talking about our
business, our customers, partners,
stakeholders, and how best we
could serve their interests in a
sustainable manner.

team of Nine One One Group laid out a 5 –
Year Strategic Plan that envisioned a future
of growth and improvement in stature of the
company as a true value adding partner of choice in
the East African market and beyond. To achieve this,
the company outlined three key objectives it would
endeavor to achieve over the period;
Growth: building on successes achieved over the
past 5 years, the company targets to sustain a net
turnover in excess of Ksh. 3 billion and be among the
top three security companies in East Africa. “This
can only be achieved if we fortify our relationship
with customers and stakeholders even as we seek
new growth opportunities. We are therefore well
positioned with this standard to ensure we not
only serve our customers well, but also continually
improve our capacity to expand our reach to achieve
this growth”, adds the CEO.
People: For the organization, her people are her
greatest assets and it is no surprise that employee
welfare sits among their core values. The company
aims to be an employer of choice in the markets they
operate in. “We are as good as our people are,” says
Mr. Omondi adding that the plan focuses on not only
attracting, developing and retaining best talent, but
also in providing the best working environment. This
way, staff are motivated well enough to give services
to the best of their capabilities.
Brand Promise: being a pioneer in fleet tracking
and security emergency response services in Kenya
and Uganda, the company is keen to be a recognized
brand in East and Central Africa known for its
innovative edge and responsive culture focused
on retaining relationships in the niche markets thy
serve.
“The above objectives are anchored on key pillars
revolving around People, Market, Technology driven
innovations and Quality Assurance. ISO 9001:2008
Quality Management Systems certification for us
therefore is not an accident, but an important part of
implementing our strategic plan” explains the CEO.

the Steering Committee.
I had the privilege of attending
an exerting examinable ISO Lead
Auditors Training Course carried
out by BUREAU VERITAS and other
awareness trainings conducted
by our Consultants Kwality
Management Solutions Limited
that equipped me with necessary
skills to face the task ahead. Our
journey towards certification was
in several phases;
The first phase was an
organization – wide ISO awareness
training at various levels of the
organization structure to enable
employees understand the need
and importance implementing a
Quality Management System in
our company. These trainings were
categorized as Top Management
Briefing, General Staff Awareness
Training and the QMS Internal
Auditors Training.
The Second phase involved
conducting extensive gap analysis
to establish the existence of
policies supported by systems and
procedures in the company. Where
such policies and procedures
existed, their relevance was
discussed in forums that coopted
representatives of all who were
affected by the processes; while
where there were none, new policies
and procedures were formulated
through the same forums. This
phase was the most exhausting but
through the commitment and hard
work of all involved, we made it.
Implementation of the
documented processes was the
third phase. This was to ensure
that we were practicing what we
had laid down as our procedures
in conformity to the Quality
ManagementSystemsandcustomer
requirements. Several audits were
conducted by our Internal QMS
Auditors and Consultant. In total we
had 3 Internal Audits where areas of
non – conformity were identified
and corrective actions taken by the
Heads of Departments.
AftertheInternalAudits,BUREAU
VERITAS conducted two other
Audits i.e. Stage I Audit which was to
checkourreadinessforCertification
and the implementation status of
the Quality Management Systems.
Stage II or Pre – Certifications Audit
was conducted thereafter after the
few concerns from the first audit
had been satisfactorily addressed.
This exercise was very thorough but
the team pulled together to ensure
that the nonconformities raised
were closed within time. Finally we
got recommended for certification
in August 2015, and full certification
by November 2015.
WHAT NEXT AFTER
CERTIFICATION?
My role as the Quality Assurance
Officer has been given more
credence in the organization with
a special space in the management
meetings where I report on
company’s performance against the
Quality Management System and in
meeting customer expectations.
Alsorecognizingthatcertification
is just but the beginning, I work very
closely with departmental heads
to ensure that we live up to our
QMS, institute lasting corrective
measures where we falter while also
identifying areas of improvement.
We are subject to periodic audits by
BUREAU VERITAS team and this is
an additional motivation for me to
things are running well.

goal of exceeding customer
expectations” says Ms. Janet Kirui,
the Head of Sales & Customer
Service.
According to Ms. Kirui, any
staff from Nine One One Group
representing the company speaks a
different language - that of utmost
service to customers. They are
aware that being ISO certified goes
beyond the certificates, but must
be reflected and felt in a changed
attitude conforming to the new
status.
As the Head of Sales, Ms. Kirui
reiterates that the selling process
has been made easy with the
achievement. Customers both
new and existing would want to
be associated with a company that
subscribes to standards recognized
both locally and internationally.
According to her, the company has
a strong brand in the industry and
with this kind of achievement the
brand has been elevated to another
level.
N

involved in a number of
projects to give back to the
society. The Company has in
the past mobilized resources to assist New
Life Home Trust that helps abandoned and

The company has also been actively
involved in various tree planting and clean-
up campaigns especially in the Upper
Hill area of Nairobi; while also running an

Nine One One Group Achieves
ISO 9001:2008 Certification
BY PETER KIRAGU
T
he journey of Nine One One
Group Limited can be traced back
to the year 1995, a period that
was marred by rise in incidences
of carjacking, armed robberies and theft
of vehicles that put Kenya under focus of
the international community as diplomats
were not spared in the seemingly unchecked
crime trend. A group of enterprising
Kenyans, partnering with best international
technology providers at that time responded
to this menace by incorporating Car Track
Kenya Limited, the first such stolen vehicle
recovery services in East Africa.
“The technology at that time was VHF –
based, and required massive investment in
infrastructure and recovery logistics. At the
height of these operations, the Company
even had on lease contracts helicopters that
could be deployed at short notice to support
recovery teams on the ground” explains Mr.
Omondi
The following year, and with the
increasing number of vehicles on our
roads, another need to provide emergency
security response services arose. Given Car
Track’s substantial infrastructure in the
ground, the shareholders made a timely
decision to incorporate Nine One One Kenya
Limited to offer 911 – type security response
security response services including
roadside support to motorists, security
escorts and breakdown services. With the
advent of the first pricy mobile phones, the
company partnered with a leading mobile
telecommunications company to package
an all rounded vehicle tracking and phone –
based security emergency response to these
high-end clients.
The company was later to expand to
offering manned guarding under Delta
Security Services (later renamed First Force
Security Services), Cash in Transit and other
security solutions in 1997.
Following successes and recovery record
of Car Track in Kenya, the company was
invited to set up shop in Uganda in 2001 in a
highly publicized event that was attended by
high-ranking government officials including
the Deputy Prime Minister at that time. The
company later registered a subsidiary in
Tanzania, enabling it to offer services to the
over 15,000 clients it had in the region.
“It’s not only a history of firsts but also a
journey towards becoming a truly world-
class organization in how we conduct
business,” says the Nine One One Group
Chief Executive Officer Charles Omondi in an
interview.“The journey has not been without
missteps or missed opportunities but the
commitment of the shareholders, directors,
management and staff to continually adopt
the best practices, innovation, technology
and operations in strengthening our
relationships with our clients and supply
chain has never wavered” assures” assures
Mr. Omondi.
REBRANDING GIVES THE COMPANY A
MORE VIBRANT LOOK AND MARKET
POSITION
In 2013 the company embarked on a
consolidation and brand development
exercise meant to augment operational
synergies among the three companies while
improving brand identity. A decision was
made to consolidate these operations under
Nine One One Group Limited and in the
process also make possible the integration of
the company’s security solutions under one
operating umbrella.
“We have seen this brand grow from
strength to strength stemming from the ease
with which our clientele base in different
service lines, supply chain and stakeholders

we have nurtured from our successes in

“Our focus moving forward is to continue
informing the market of our capabilities, and
to make it easy for them to connect with us
in fulfilling their security needs.”

  • 4. Page 38 Tuesday, May 31, 2016 / The Standard Nine One One Group Achieves ISO 9001:2008 Certification the Steering Committee. I had the privilege of attending an exerting examinable ISO Lead Auditors Training Course carried out by BUREAU VERITAS and other awareness trainings conducted by our Consultants Kwality Management Solutions Limited that equipped me with necessary skills to face the task ahead. Our journey towards certification was in several phases; The first phase was an organization – wide ISO awareness training at various levels of the organization structure to enable employees understand the need and importance implementing a Quality Management System in our company. These trainings were categorized as Top Management Briefing, General Staff Awareness Training and the QMS Internal Auditors Training. The Second phase involved conducting extensive gap analysis to establish the existence of policies supported by systems and procedures in the company. Where such policies and procedures existed, their relevance was discussed in forums that coopted representatives of all who were affected by the processes; while where there were none, new policies and procedures were formulated through the same forums. This phase was the most exhausting but through the commitment and hard work of all involved, we made it. Implementation of the documented processes was the third phase. This was to ensure that we were practicing what we had laid down as our procedures in conformity to the Quality ManagementSystemsandcustomer requirements. Several audits were conducted by our Internal QMS Auditors and Consultant. In total we had 3 Internal Audits where areas of non – conformity were identified and corrective actions taken by the Heads of Departments. AftertheInternalAudits,BUREAU VERITAS conducted two other Audits i.e. Stage I Audit which was to checkourreadinessforCertification and the implementation status of the Quality Management Systems. Stage II or Pre – Certifications Audit was conducted thereafter after the few concerns from the first audit had been satisfactorily addressed. This exercise was very thorough but the team pulled together to ensure that the nonconformities raised were closed within time. Finally we got recommended for certification in August 2015, and full certification by November 2015. WHAT NEXT AFTER CERTIFICATION? My role as the Quality Assurance Officer has been given more credence in the organization with a special space in the management meetings where I report on company’s performance against the Quality Management System and in meeting customer expectations. Alsorecognizingthatcertification is just but the beginning, I work very closely with departmental heads to ensure that we live up to our QMS, institute lasting corrective measures where we falter while also identifying areas of improvement. We are subject to periodic audits by BUREAU VERITAS team and this is an additional motivation for me to things are running well. ISOcertificationprocesswasrigorousbutwemadeit! • 6. Page 40 Tuesday, May 31, 2016 / The Standard Nine One One Group Achieves ISO 9001:2008 Certification BY PETER KIRAGU T he journey of Nine One One Group Limited can be traced back to the year 1995, a period that was marred by rise in incidences of carjacking, armed robberies and theft of vehicles that put Kenya under focus of the international community as diplomats were not spared in the seemingly unchecked crime trend. A group of enterprising Kenyans, partnering with best international technology providers at that time responded to this menace by incorporating Car Track Kenya Limited, the first such stolen vehicle recovery services in East Africa. “The technology at that time was VHF – based, and required massive investment in infrastructure and recovery logistics. At the height of these operations, the Company even had on lease contracts helicopters that could be deployed at short notice to support recovery teams on the ground” explains Mr. Omondi The following year, and with the increasing number of vehicles on our roads, another need to provide emergency security response services arose. Given Car Track’s substantial infrastructure in the ground, the shareholders made a timely decision to incorporate Nine One One Kenya Limited to offer 911 – type security response security response services including roadside support to motorists, security escorts and breakdown services. With the advent of the first pricy mobile phones, the company partnered with a leading mobile telecommunications company to package an all rounded vehicle tracking and phone – based security emergency response to these high-end clients. The company was later to expand to offering manned guarding under Delta Security Services (later renamed First Force Security Services), Cash in Transit and other security solutions in 1997. Following successes and recovery record of Car Track in Kenya, the company was invited to set up shop in Uganda in 2001 in a highly publicized event that was attended by high-ranking government officials including the Deputy Prime Minister at that time. The company later registered a subsidiary in Tanzania, enabling it to offer services to the over 15,000 clients it had in the region. “It’s not only a history of firsts but also a journey towards becoming a truly world- class organization in how we conduct business,” says the Nine One One Group Chief Executive Officer Charles Omondi in an interview.“The journey has not been without missteps or missed opportunities but the commitment of the shareholders, directors, management and staff to continually adopt the best practices, innovation, technology and operations in strengthening our relationships with our clients and supply chain has never wavered” assures” assures Mr. Omondi. REBRANDING GIVES THE COMPANY A MORE VIBRANT LOOK AND MARKET POSITION In 2013 the company embarked on a consolidation and brand development exercise meant to augment operational synergies among the three companies while improving brand identity. A decision was made to consolidate these operations under Nine One One Group Limited and in the process also make possible the integration of the company’s security solutions under one operating umbrella. “We have seen this brand grow from strength to strength stemming from the ease with which our clientele base in different service lines, supply chain and stakeholders areabletodealwithus, andfromthegoodwill we have nurtured from our successes in the past”, explains Mr. Omondi. He adds, “Our focus moving forward is to continue informing the market of our capabilities, and to make it easy for them to connect with us in fulfilling their security needs.” TheJourneyofNineOneOneGroupLimited We have seen this brand grow from strength to strength stemming from the ease with which our clientele base in different service lines, supply chain and stakeholders are able to deal with us, and from the goodwill we have nurtured from our successes in the past Car Track installations are carried out in a secure environment under strict supervision Modern training techniques are used to get the best out of our officers
