2. Working Group 1
Buildings and their Sustainability Performance
Research Agenda:
Principle 1 of the ISCN-GULF Sustainable Campus Charter
To demonstrate respect for nature and society, sustainability
considerations should be an integral part of planning,
construction, renovation, and operation of buildings on campus.
ISCN 2016
3. Key Issues Discussed
Presentations:
Yale University: Tilting the balance with a carbon charge
Bogazici University: Green Dormitory (Hamlin Hall)- Measuring occupant
interaction and behavior
Nanyang Technological University: Case study – The Hive at NTU
Royal Institute of Technology: The live in lab – Test beds for building and
housing technology and innovation
ISCN 2016
4. Goals for 2016-2017
1. Explore and develop post occupancy methodologies to evaluate
effectiveness of design and operations of sustainable buildings and
assess occupant understanding of the systems and the impacts of
their behaviour (eg. Assessing occupant comfort vs trade offs). As
part of this research run a webinar specifically designed to stimulate
discussion and develop options for ISCN tools.
2. Survey ISCN membership to determine the sustainable design and
operation skill sets in management/operational staff and the
broader professional support industries.
3. Complete further research on the impacts of building automation on
occupant behavior.
4. Research behavioural modification strategies in the tertiary sector,
including incentive schemes and charge models.
