Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) had, on 15th May (Monday), unveiled the list of bidders who had submitted bids for a total tendered capacity of 500 MW solar rooftop projects (originally 1000 MW). Our representative had witnessed the event and has collated first-hand information, which, we wish to clarify might carry some shades of inaccuracy and the numbers might not be entirely sacrosanct.
Nevertheless, you can peep into the document to know which states are on fire and mostly sought, who are the bidders in the race to pick up allocation and who are the new entrants that have thrown their hats in the ring for the first time.

Solar and Wind Powered Hybrid Energy Vehiclekushaal hn
The wind and solar powered car has high efficiency and is a maintenance free vehicle. The car works on the concept of charging and discharging of the battery on board. When the vehicle runs the motor consumes power from the battery and after certain kilometers, it needs to be recharged. In this car, power is generated from wind turbines and the solar modules and are directed to the battery for the charging. The battery is recharged on board and the car doesn’t need to be standby for charging. To conserve the energy and to utilize it at best we are designing a vehicle which will run on the battery which will get charged by free energy sources. Then as per the requirement, we connected the solar panel and wind energy generator motor

The power of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulations can be effectively used for failure analysis and design optimization to improve product reliability and mitigate operational risks. Expandable Liner Hangers used for wellbore construction within the oil and gas industry are complex mechanical systems that require sophisticated setting tools. A key to develop reliable setting tools is to use virtual FEA simulations to predict failure modes and verify system design behavior and performance before making costly prototypes. We can’t afford to do multiple physical prototype tests to validate designs in today’s business economics conditions.
This presentation summarizes FEA based anchor cage impact failure analysis and design optimization of a crush ring to mitigate the impact damage risk for the anchor cage subassembly that is used in an expandable liner hanger setting tool. Altair/Hyperworks and Abaqus/Explicit FEA simulation software are used to perform FEA simulations to optimize the crush ring design. Hypermesh FE mesh morphing capability helped to build various shapes of the crush ring designs quickly without creating CAD models and enabled us to run multiple FEA iterations for faster turnaround. FEA based design optimization helped us to identify design limitations, capture most of the design failure modes and then explore multiple design alternatives for the crush ring design to improve and optimize product performance before building physical (costly) prototypes.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
Work done in cooperation with James Malloy and David Moelling from Tetra Engineering.

Hybrid optimization of pumped hydro system and solar- Engr. Abdul-Azeez.pdffxintegritypublishin
Advancements in technology unveil a myriad of electrical and electronic breakthroughs geared towards efficiently harnessing limited resources to meet human energy demands. The optimization of hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems plays a pivotal role in utilizing natural resources effectively. This initiative not only benefits humanity but also fosters environmental sustainability. The study investigated the design optimization of these hybrid systems, focusing on understanding solar radiation patterns, identifying geographical influences on solar radiation, formulating a mathematical model for system optimization, and determining the optimal configuration of PV panels and pumped hydro storage. Through a comparative analysis approach and eight weeks of data collection, the study addressed key research questions related to solar radiation patterns and optimal system design. The findings highlighted regions with heightened solar radiation levels, showcasing substantial potential for power generation and emphasizing the system's efficiency. Optimizing system design significantly boosted power generation, promoted renewable energy utilization, and enhanced energy storage capacity. The study underscored the benefits of optimizing hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems for sustainable energy usage. Optimizing the design of solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems as examined across diverse climatic conditions in a developing country, not only enhances power generation but also improves the integration of renewable energy sources and boosts energy storage capacities, particularly beneficial for less economically prosperous regions. Additionally, the study provides valuable insights for advancing energy research in economically viable areas. Recommendations included conducting site-specific assessments, utilizing advanced modeling tools, implementing regular maintenance protocols, and enhancing communication among system components.

ISCC in MENA
ISCC in MENA
One reason is possibly because of the relatively
conservative nature of policy makers and engineering
firms in the region. Renewable energy is still very much
in its infancy in MENA. The appetite for large, high-risk
projects is still limited. Which is maybe why there is
increasing interest in integrated solar combined cycle
(ISCC) plants. These give MENA companies a chance to
try out CSP while working with a standard generating
technology.
Great news for CSP in MENA, then. But the
question for CSP developers is how to position
their technologies to make most of this emerging
opportunity… and where to find potential projects.
ISCC: an overview
ISCCs are a form of hybrid power plant in which a
CSP solar field is used to improve the efficiency of a
combined-cycled plant (see figure 1).
Source: Prof Ulf Herrmann, from ‘National Renewable Energy Laboratory USA Trough Initiative, Integrated Solar Combined Cycle Systems’.
Used with permission.
In theory, any CSP technology could be used in ISCC.
However, all projects to date have relied on parabolic
trough because it is the more widely established
technology and may have certain advantages in the
MENA region (see below). Additionally, it is important
to note that there are significant challenges in
converting existing combined cycle plants into ISCC
projects.
Johannes Kretschmann of Fichtner, the consulting
engineers firm, says: “If it’s an existing plant the design
process is difficult because you are adding steam, so
you need an oversized steam generator.”
For this, it is generally considered far easier to build
an ISCC from scratch rather than converting existing
combined cycle facilities. Furthermore, the conversion
of existing combined cycle plants to ISCC requires
plentiful, cheap land in a high-DNI location, not to
The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is a complicated region for CSP. In terms of

mention a landscape that is suitable for the installation
of a solar field.
Alternatively, with the right site characteristics it may
be possible to convert an open cycle gas plant to ISCC
with relative ease, since the steam cycle has to be
incorporated in any case. Finally, Dr Luis Crespo of the
European solar thermal association ESTELA points out
that a potentially more efficient way of connecting gas
with CSP would be to build a power tower with large
amounts of molten salt storage and locate an open
cycle gas plant alongside it.
With this configuration, Crespo says, excess output
from either the solar field or the gas plant could be
stored for later re-use, allowing more higher utilisation
of both plants.
Current ISCC projects
Table 1 summarises the ISCC projects currently in
operation or planned worldwide.
Parabolic trough is being used in more than half of
these projects. Its dominance can be attributed to
it being the most established CSP technology and
therefore one that helps to reduce the risk of what is
already potentially a complex project. In addition, the
other technologies each have certain drawbacks that
could restrict their use. For example:
„„ Linear Fresnel solar fields may have difficulty
achieving temperatures high enough to integrate
well with combined cycle operations.
„„ Dish technologies only have a limited deployment
history and may not be desirable for risk-averse
developers.
„„ Power towers will suffer from attenuation losses in
regions with high levels of dust or other airborne
particles.
To date, MENA has been the preferred region for ISCC
development. Prof Ulf Herrmann, executive director

of the Solar-Institute Jülich in Germany, believes this
preference may be because the technology can act
as a stepping stone between the region’s current
generation technologies and solar. “You are able to go
down the path of transforming your energy system
step-wise,” he says.

ISCC in MENA
Saudi Arabian ISCC
Within MENA, Saudi Arabia leads ISCC deployment. Dr
Hany Al-Ansary, assistant professor at the Mechanical
Engineering Department of the College of Engineering
at King Saud University, says: “The Saudi Electricity
Company, SEC, is constructing two parabolic trough
plants, each of which is 50MW and configured as
ISCC.”
The Waad Al Shamal and Duba 1 projects are being
financed by the SEC with government funds. This
appears to be the preferred funding option for ISCC in
the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Rayyan
Nagadi, director of project and export finance for HSBC
Saudi Arabia confirms: “None of the CSP projects in
the GCC I am aware of have yet approached the market
for financing.”
The Saudi bids were theoretically open to any CSP
technology, although in practice it seems the dusty
conditions found in the country might limit the
application of power towers. Alexandre Allegue, general
manager of solar developer Sun and Life expects
parabolic trough to win out in the market “due to its
reliability.”
Afshin Tafazzoli, business development manager
with Abengoa’s subsidiary Abeinsa, says the projects
in Saudi Arabia are clearly designed to help SEC
investigate the potential of solar power. “These
projects are not optimised with solar,” he says. “It’s
about testing the plants.”
Potential future sites
Table 2 summarises further open or combined cycle
gas plants that may offer potential for solar field
integration. This list is not intended to be exhaustive
and is based on a visual assessment of data on
the Global Energy Observatory database, with site
selection based on the following criteria:
„„ Sufficient distance from shore to avoid the effects of
water vapour and tourist development.
„„ Apparent lack of nearby construction, arable land,
infrastructure or other types of land use.
„„ Availability of sufficient neighbouring land for a solar
field.
