The Iroquois lived in the forests surrounding lakes Ontario and Erie in what is now New York state. They grew corn, squash, and beans and hunted and gathered other foods that were available depending on the seasons. The Iroquois wore clothes made of deerskin or buffalo skin that differed for summer and winter. They lived in longhouses made of elm bark year-round. The Iroquois invented lacrosse and had an important confederacy and cultural traditions like dream ceremonies.
