Iraq has faced political instability and violence since the US withdrawal in 2011. The Arab Spring and Syrian Civil War exacerbated issues between Sunni and Shiite groups in Iraq. Sunni militant groups like ISIS took control of large parts of Iraq in 2014, displacing hundreds of thousands of people. In response, Haider al-Abadi became the new Prime Minister in 2014 to form a more inclusive government. However, the country still faces major threats from ISIS control, a deteriorating economy due to falling oil prices and war, and a near non-existent public health system due to lack of funding and infrastructure issues. While al-Abadi has made reforms, large parts of Iraq remain outside of government control.
