Securing the Internet of Things Opportunity: Putting Cybersecurity at the Hea...Capgemini
The potential trillion dollar Internet of Things (IoT) business opportunity rests precariously on one critical factor – security. 71% of executives in our survey agreed that security concerns will influence customers’ purchase decision for IoT products. However, despite increasing cyber attacks and ample warning from security experts, most organizations do not provide adequate security and privacy safeguards for their IoT products. In fact, only 33% of IoT executives in our survey believe that the IoT products in their industry are highly resilient to cyber security attacks. Further, despite rising consumer concerns regarding data privacy, 47% of organizations do not provide any privacy related information regarding their IoT products.
So, why are organizations lagging behind in securing their IoT products and systems? Key reasons for this include an expanded attack surface, inefficiencies in the IoT product development process, and the lack of specialized security skill-sets. For instance, our survey showed that only 48% of companies focus on securing their IoT products from the beginning of the product development phase. Building a secure IoT system begins with the recognition that security needs to be as much of a priority as the features and functionality of an IoT product. The report highlights the key measures that organizations must take in order to put security at the core of their IoT value proposition.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE 1 OPPORTUNITY 1 OPPORTUNITY 2 OPPORTUNITY 3STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE 2 STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE 3INTRODUCTION
The Internet of Things, or IoT, is all about bringing the
Internet to devices that you typically don’t think of as
being connected. It’s about taking Internet
connectivity beyond such traditional
devices as desktop and laptop computers,
smartphones and tablets to other devices
and…things.
IoT involves:
• Embedding these objects with software,
sensors and network connectivity
• Giving each one an IP address to create a
unique network identity
• Connecting them to let users interact
with and monitor them.
Each IoT-connected device can send and receive
information and communicate with other objects without
human-to-human interaction.
Although IoT is a new concept for many,
it already connects more than five
billion devices worldwide. That number is
expected to grow to 30 billion over the
next decade. With this kind of expected
growth, it is the wise organization that
is developing a strategy to reap the
benefits IoT offers and remain competitive,
regardless of the industry in which
they operate.
WHAT IS THE INTERNET OF THINGS?

profits and cost savings to organizations over
the next decade.

STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE 1 OPPORTUNITY 1 OPPORTUNITY 2 OPPORTUNITY 3STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE 2 STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE 3INTRODUCTION
IoT is one of many “disruptive technologies” that are
driving innovation. This new breed of offerings is creating
new markets and displacing established
competitors that are slow – or simply
refuse – to adopt new ways of doing
business. Companies that wish to remain
competitive are assessing how these
revolutionary technologies can help
increase their productivity, agility and
cost efficiency.
Disruptive technologies such as IoT, cloud
computing, big data and analytics can
help you streamline your operations
and support new ways to engage with
your customers. Choosing the right
set of technologies and maximizing the
returns they can offer, however, remain
core challenges.
IoT is at the beginning of its growth cycle. Because it
offers the ability to capture and use data across virtually
every aspect of your operation, the
potential benefit is enormous. To get there,
Frost & Sullivan believes organizations must
ask themselves these key questions as they
begin to investigate IoT:
• Where does IoT fit within the scope of
my unique business requirements?
• What real-world benefits can IoT deliver
for me?
• How do I find the optimal IoT solution
partner?

IoT Made Simple: Preparing for Success with IoT
The Internet of Things will become pervasive. It has evolved from a competitive differentiator
to a competitive requirement. If your business is not currently invested in IoT, running
a pilot to evaluate how IoT can help is a prudent first step. To set one up, you must
first choose the right IoT solutions partner.
5. 5
DRAMATIC PACE OF INNOVATION REQUIRES VERSATILE SOLUTIONS
STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE 1 OPPORTUNITY 1 OPPORTUNITY 2 OPPORTUNITY 3STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE 2 STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE 3INTRODUCTION
Businesses can reinvent themselves by implementing
disruptive technologies. Data-driven enablers such as IoT
and intelligent automation add huge
benefits to companies that adopt them,
while those that hesitate to commit to a
digital future could fall behind.
Frost & Sullivan research suggests IT
decision makers are especially concerned
with their ability to make timely and
effective investments, comply with new
regulatory requirements, and improve
business processes.
At the same time, the relationship between consumers
and businesses is fundamentally changing. Consumers
want greater choices, better control and
24-7 access to services. Therefore,
businesses such as yours must adopt agile
technologies that allow you to respond
quickly to this new customer mindset. It’s
time to say goodbye to legacy technologies
that will prevent you from adapting – and
thriving.
IoT Made Simple: Preparing for Success with IoT
IoT collects vast amounts of data that can improve existing products and enhance
the development of new ones. You can track how your products and services are used
and by whom. IoT lets you resupply stock in timely and cost-efficient ways. With
IoT-gathered information, you can proactively offer customized service, support,
warranty plans, upgrades, add-ons and replacement recommendations.
6. 6
STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE 1 OPPORTUNITY 1 OPPORTUNITY 2 OPPORTUNITY 3STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE 2 STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE 3INTRODUCTION
IOT SHOULD BE FLEXIBLE, SCALABLE AND CUSTOMIZABLE
CUSTOMIZABLE
Changes, restructuring, innovation and competitive differentiation must not be hindered by technology
constraints. IoT infrastructure flexibility can help organizations compete, and excel, in today's business
environment that is characterized by extreme levels of competitive intensity.
Business requirements can change over time. Therefore an IoT solution should have the ability to be
rapidly modified to suit the changing requirements. Businesses should be able to implement simple
turnkey or pre-packaged solutions as a starting point and have the flexibility to add on custom features
when required.
The true potential of IoT lies in converting machine data into actionable insight. Frost & Sullivan
expects a 1,000% increase in the volume of IoT data collected by endpoints between 2016 and 2020.
IoT platforms must grow to store, manage and protect the influx of machine data.
CUSTOMIZABLE
IoT Made Simple: Preparing for Success with IoT
IoT solutions must be flexible enough to shift with a company’s evolving needs. The applications
should have simple architectures, be easily configurable, and require minimal upfront custom
development. Companies should partner with a vendor that can help in each step of the
IoT journey, from envisioning to strategy formulation to technology selection.
IoT allows your business to improve existing operations and enter new markets.
SCALABLE
FLEXIBLE
7. 7
IoT Made Simple: Preparing for Success with IoT
STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE 1 OPPORTUNITY 1 OPPORTUNITY 2 OPPORTUNITY 3STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE 2 STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE 3INTRODUCTION
The ways in which your products are developed are about
to change – dramatically. Even your business proposition
is likely to be fundamentally altered. These new realities
are being driven by a series of revolutionary new business
models that include:
• The Sharing Economy, where products are shared
among multiple users in a pay-per-use model
• Product Personalization and Customization,
including personal and on-demand product
manufacturing
• Crowdsourcing and Co-creation, where product
development is opened to the masses, and
• Product as a Service, which sees products offered
on a subscription or subsidy model.
Technologies that help companies measure and monetize
the usage of their products are essential for supporting
these models.
NEXT-GENERATION BUSINESS MODELS REDEFINE FUTURE BUSINESS PROPOSITIONS
8. 8
STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE 1 OPPORTUNITY 1 OPPORTUNITY 2 OPPORTUNITY 3STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE 2 STRATEGIC IMPERATIVE 3INTRODUCTION
Product as a Service allows providers to offer products as
integrated service offerings. You pay a recurring fee for
using the product. The provider manages the product or
solution through its lifecycle. They can offer service
contracts,support,enhancements,upgrades and extended
warranty programs to drive revenues and create
long-term relationships with you. For example, providers
can offer IoT as a Service and provide the management of
devices, applications and connectivity for customers.
Some successful IoT solutions being delivered as a
service today include:
• Tracking asset locations as they move through the
supply chain, and
• Food Safety solutions that monitor and record
temperatures of assets used in preparation and storage
of food items.
EMERGENCE OF PRODUCT AS A SERVICE BUSINESS MODEL
IoT Made Simple: Preparing for Success with IoT
Forward-thinking businesses want to re-invent themselves by providing faster, more effective,
safer and cheaper customer service and support. IoT allows you to proactively analyze
and repair issues before they become serious (and expensive). Consequently, IoT
can reduce your equipment downtime and repair costs.
