What is Internet of Things?
 The IoT is a giant network of connecting any device with an
on and off switch to the Internet.
 includes everything from cellphones, coffee makers, washing
machines, headphones, lamps, wearable devices.
 connected "things" (which also includes people).
 The relationship will be between people-people, people-
things, and things-things.
Examples for IoT
▪ Remember to take your meds
▪ Maintain quality & consistency
▪ Heat your home efficiently
▪ Keep streets clean
▪ Maintain & Repair
▪ Track water
▪ Check on the baby
How does this Impact us?
▪ The new rule for the future is going to be, "Anything
that can be connected, will be connected.“
▪ IoT can be applied to things like transportation
networks: "smart cities“ which can help us reduce
waste and improve efficiency.
▪ helps us to understand and improve how we work
and live.
▪ opens up companies all over the world to more
security threats.
Current State of IoT in India
The IoT ecosystem in India is mainly driven by 3 players:
▪ Government
▪ Industry
▪ Start-ups
Current State of IoT in India
Government:
▪ Government’s objective is to create an IoT industry in
India of USD 15 billion by 2020.
▪ include smart water, smart environment and smart
health.
▪ Govt plan - the formation of Centre of Excellence on
Internet ofThings as a joint initiative with NASSCOM
to nurture and grow the IoT ecosystem
Current State of IoT in India
Industries: IoT will transform how companies do
business when they grab onto its innovations.
▪ about one-fifth of manufacturing companies are using
IoT to increase production and reduce costs.
▪ manufacturing sector in India is envisioned to be
capital efficient and flexible.
▪ Automobile industries are aiming to feature-rich, safer
and cost effective products and services.
▪ IT industry connects machine-to-machine and human-
to-machine in a innovative way.
Current State of IoT in India
▪ Other Industries adopters of IoT are mining,
healthcare, banking and education.
▪ Companies who are active in IoT space in India are:
▪ Intel ,Volkswagen
▪ MediaTek , Hero MotoCorp
▪ Hindustan Petroleum, Apollo Hospitals
▪ Cisco,Bharti Infratel
▪ TVS Motor and IBM
Current State of IoT in India
Start-ups:
▪ Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad are the four major
cities where we would discover a few startups.
▪ IoTBlr -based out of Bangalore, 2nd largest IoT-focused meet-up
community across the world to help spread knowledge and
awareness about IoT.
▪ IoT HackDay -based out of Hyderabad, conducts Hackathons
which helps bring collective knowledge and innovation to
address the challenges in IoT and smart cities space.
PROS and CONS
PROS:
▪ Automation of daily tasks leads to better monitoring of
devices
▪ Efficient and SavesTime
▪ Saves Money
▪ Better Quality of Life
PROS and CONS
CONS:
▪ Loss of privacy and security
▪ Compatibility
▪ Complexity
▪ TechnologyTakes Control of Life
▪ Lesser Employment of Menial Staff
Conclusion
▪ The analyst firm Gartner says that by 2020 there
will be over 26 billion connected devices...
▪ We are also trying to understand what the many
opportunities and challenges are going to be as
more and more devices start to join the IoT.
