The document discusses trends in hardware startups and investing. It finds that investment in hardware startups rocketed between 2012-2013. While hardware makes up a small portion of total IoT spending, crowdfunding has become an important validation step for hardware companies to prove demand before pursuing larger VC rounds. Successful hardware startups often leverage software and recurring revenue business models, with crowdfunding helping to accelerate company value growth between funding rounds.
Scenarios for Smart Devices in 2025: Brave New Smartphone and/or Black Mirror?3G4G
Presented by David Wood, Principal, Delta Wisdom
In this talk anticipating future scenarios for smart devices, futurist and smartphone industry pioneer David Wood suggests answers to a number of key questions. What are the key trends we should be watching, to see if they'll ever emerge from a slow disappointing phase into a fast and furious phase? How might these trends combine to shake up present-day usage patterns? Will the successors of the smartphone accelerate a Brave New World, and/or make Black Mirror a reality? And what can we learn from past predictions of future smartphone scenarios?

VISIONFC – an NFC Forum event: The future of the Internet of Things + NFC pre...NFC Forum
At the recent VISIONFC sessions hosted by the NFC Forum, Forrester, HID, and Bluebite shared their perspective on what the future holds for NFC and the Internet of things.
Forrester - The NFC Opportunity In The IoT
Forrester's keynote presentation focuses on the opportunities and challenges for NFC in sectors such as the Internet of Things (IoT), mobile payment, and retail.
HID - Abandon Status Quo: NFC Technology is More than Just Payments
Presentation includes innovative use cases how HID Global is integrating NFC technology to secure Internet of Things applications incorporating frictionless cloud authentication and mobile technology. Three distinct applications will be demonstrated: 1) Promotional Marketing Engagement – Tribecca Film Festival, 2) Home Healthcare to track visits and care provided from healthcare professionals, and 3) Security Patrols implemented across corporate offices or campuses.
Bluebite - A Day in the Life with IoT
This presentation will equip and empower brands with an impactful role before, during, and after the consumer path to purchase. By leveraging this ecosystem, a trove of value can be derived from IoT and adapted to mainstream retail markets. It is therefore our prerogative to demonstrate this cycle as a demo at VISIONFC.

The Internet of Things—what many are calling the Fourth Industrial Revolution—is shaping up to be a game-changing marvel as great as the Internet itself. With more than 10 billion connected devices and thousands more coming online by the minute, we are undoubtedly more connected than ever before. From your dishwasher to your toothbrush to your dog’s collar, electronic devices everywhere are connected. This phenomenon is drastically increasing demands on APIs, data, security, and software quality, pushing every industry sector to step up its game to stay relevant in the new era of connectedness. Although IoT will make our lives simpler as Things talk to other Things and anticipate our needs, mobile apps and devices—our primary communication conduit—will continue to increase in relevance and reliance. Steven Winter shares his insights about the challenges of IoT from his experience building a quality program to support the Starbucks Card Mobile and more than 3,000 mobile apps servicing 1,500 banks and 35 million users. Steven focuses on how automated mobile testing and continuous improvement for mobile apps have forged inroads for the IoT and why software quality will grow in importance as a market differentiator.

IoT-Where is the Money? - Chandrashekar Raman, Engagement Manager, IoT Strate...Lounge47
“Internet of Things (IoT) – Where is the Money?” - This talk highlighted the need for innovative business and technical models. Top 5 key takeaways from the session: 1) Analyze business models from the perspective of targeting “control points” (allows disproportionate share of value e.g. platform), “network externalities” (users generate more users e.g. facebook) and “virtuous cycle” (self-propogating value system e.g. Twitter: tweets generating more, value, tweeters and users) 2) Fog computing (solutions at the edge of the network) should be considered for "time sensitive" or "mission critical" solutions 3) IoT Stats 2013: $1.7B funding, 186 deals, 30% up YOY, 75% up on exits, largely in platforms; Cisco estimates 50B connected devices by 2020, economic value of 19 trillion added in next decade 4) Manufacturing and Smart Cities most immediate opportunities in Enterprise space 5) Key Challenges are security and time-sensitive networking. In summary, IoT Startups focused in a hot space need to pick clever business models relative to the competition.
Attaining IoT Value: How To Move from Connecting Things to Capturing InsightsSustainable Brands
Cisco estimates that the Internet of Everything (IoE) — the networked connection of people, process, data, and things — will generate $19 trillion in Value at Stake for the private and public sectors combined between 2013 and 2022. More than 42 percent of this value — $8 trillion — will come from one of IoE’s chief enablers, the Internet of Things (IoT). Defined by Cisco as “the intelligent connectivity of physical devices, driving massive gains in efficiency, business growth, and quality of life,” IoT often represents the quickest path to IoE value for private and public sector organizations.
This paper combines original and secondary research, as well as economic analysis, to provide a roadmap for maximizing value from IoT investments. It also explains why, in the worlds of IoT and IoE, the combination of edge computing/analytics and data center/cloud is essential to driving actionable insights that produce improved business outcomes.
