Ethics, Openness and the Future of Learning
What difference does openness make to ethics' This session will examine this question both from the perspective of research into OER and the use of open resources in teaching and learning. An outline of the nature and importance of ethics will be provided before the basic principles of research ethics are outlined through an examination of the guidance provided by National Institutes of Health (2014) and BERA (2014). The importance and foundation of institutional approval for OER research activities is reiterated with a focus on underlying principles that can also be applied openly.
I argue that with a shift to informal (or extra-institutional) learning there is a risk that we lose some clarity over the nature and extent of our moral obligations when working outside institutional frameworks – what Weller (2013) has termed "guerilla" research activity. Innovations of this kind could be free of licensing permissions; they could be funded by kickstarter or public-private enterprise; or they could reflect individuals working as data journalists. But we might also speak of "guerilla" education for innovations taking place on the fringes of institutional activity – from using social media to going full-blown "edupunk" (Groom, 2008). These innovations which employ variants of opennesss can also bring out morally complex situations.
I show how the principles underlying traditional research ethics can be applied openly while noting that, whether working within or outside institutions, there is almost no existing guidance that explains the ethical implications of working openly. Similar issues are raised with MOOC, which operate outside institutions but while drawing on institutional reputations and values. With this in mind I sketch out scenarios we are likely to encounter in the future of education:
- Issues around privacy, security and big data
- Intellectual property conflicts
- Ensuring fair treatment of class students and equivalent online students
- Meeting obligations to content creators
- The ethical status of MOOCs and their obligations to their students
- Moral dimensions of open licenses
- The ethics of learning analytics and the data it produces
I argue that, while models for ethical analysis have been proposed (e.g. Farrow, 2011) more attention should be paid to the ethics of being open. I conclude with an examination of the idea that we have a moral obligation to be open, contrasting prudential and ethical approaches to open education. At the heart of the OER movement, I argue, is a strong moral impulse that should be recognized and celebrated rather than considered the preserve of the ideologue: openness is not reducible to lowering the marginal cost of educational resources. Openness is a diverse spectrum and to leverage its true potential we need to reflect deeply on how technology has the power to challenge the normative assumptions we make about education.

The group designs and researches new media related to collaborative learning, group work, and creative work tools and applications. It generates and coordinates national and international design, research, and development projects on these topics. Abstract
This paper discusses the subject matter that students are being harmed by their overdependence on personal digital technology. It highlights four main points to support this argument and offers one counter argument. It concludes by stating that in as much as technology does harm students, it has contributed to the quality of education.
Overdependence of personal digital technology by students should be monitored and regulated as they are adversely affected.
First, statistics report that three in four teens (74%) aged 12-17 own cell phones, tablets and other devices (Pew Research Centre, 2013). This is alarming as one wonders what time do they get to their studies and even socializing. Students’ overdependence on technology adversely affects their social skills which enhance interaction and communication with others.

Lens of an Anonymous, Location-based Smartphone App
In recent education news, a new app called Yik Yak has been making headlines. Simply
put, Yik Yak is an anonymous smartphone app that displays a newsfeed for a specific geographic
location—users can log in to the app and see both a “new” and “hot” feed of recent posts within
a 1.5 mile radius of their area and may post (or “yak”) or comment on posts (Yik Yak, 2014a).
Users can “upvote” posts they like or “downvote” posts they dislike, and when a user’s post
receives a significant number of upvotes, it moves into a location’s “hot” feed and earns the user
“Yakarma,” Yik Yak’s version of reputation points (Yik Yak, 2014a). Yik Yak is specifically
targeted at college students and has become immensely popular—over 1,000 U.S. schools use
the app, and it recently raised $62 million in venture capital after its valuation was rumored to be
over $100 million (EdSurge, 2014). Unlike fellow anonymous sharing apps Whisper and Secret,
Yik Yak is less centered on confessions or private information and acts as more of a humorous
newsfeed; this may be why college students have so readily adopted it (Parkinson, 2014).
However, Yik Yak has come under fire for facilitating cyber-bullying and providing a
home for offensive and threatening content, forcing administrators to take action either by trying
to ban the app or to educate students on its use (eCampus News, 2014). Yik Yak’s response to
cyber-bullying is an internal filter that helps weed out illicit or derogatory posts—if a Yik Yak
post is downvoted to a score of -5, the post is removed (Yik Yak 2014b). It is unclear whether
Yik Yak is an actual problem on campus or if insensitive posts are simply a result of widespread
negative convictions within a campus’s culture. Can Yik Yak be blamed for issues that
administrators have failed to bring into the open and create a constructive dialogue around? Or
is Yik Yak an instigator of hateful comments?

An anthropological analysis of a sample school that uses Yik Yak could bring some
clarity to these questions. Additionally, because the app is mostly targeted at college students, it
may be a useful device for virtual ethnography on college campuses in general. Virtual
ethnography, also called online ethnography, can be defined as “the application of ethnographic
research methods to specific online communities through the observation and analysis of online
dialogue and other online artefacts” (Prior & Miller, 2012, p. 503). What is.
