1. In the area of online discourse known as social media, people are creating stuff, sharing
it, bookmarking it, and networking at a phenomenal rate. Social media is rapidly altering the
public conversation in society and establishing trends and agendas in a variety of fields,
including politics, technology, and the entertainment sector (Asur and Huberman, 2010). This is
due to social media's simplicity of use, speed, and reach. Thanks to the development of social
media over the past ten years, young people are now able to exchange ideas, emotions,
personal information, images, and videos at a truly astounding rate.
Social networking is "the act of engagement," whereas social media is a method for
communicating with a large audience (Hartshorn, 2010). Social media is a platform that enables
two-way communication between people, allowing anyone with an internet account to express
their thoughts to other social media users. Social media websites have grown in popularity in
recent years, giving young people additional opportunities for communication and interpersonal
interaction. Between 2004 and 2006, social networking saw a rise in popularity because to the
creation of Facebook and MySpace. For instance, Facebook has over 500 million users and is
continually expanding; according to Schneider (2009), 85% of undergraduate students use
Facebook. Since the number of Facebook users will increase, these figures are anticipated to
rise. And according to statistics for Youtube users, this is also the case (University of New
Hampshire, 2009).
As a category of online conversation where people produce content, social media has
exploded. It is being shared, bookmarked, and networked at an astounding rate. Due to its
simplicity of use, quickness, and reach, social media is rapidly altering societal conversation,
establishing trends, and subjects on the agenda include the environment, politics, technology,
and the industry of entertainment (Asur and Huberman, 2010). During the previous ten years,
the online world has social media has caused a significant change, with young men and women
now exchanging messages. At a truly astounding rate, ideas, emotions, personal information,
images, and videos are exchanged.
In Vicente D. Trinidad High School, many students have been using social media either
for entertainment or for studies. It is a trend that almost all students have been engage with
different social media platforms. That is why this study aimed to assess the impact of the social
media on the Mental Health of Grade 10 students.
