 ‘Pediatrics’ Greek words:
 Pedia, child
 Iatrike, treatment &
 Ics, branch of science (organized Knowledge)
 Thus, pediatrics means the science of child care and scientific treatment of
child hood diseases.
 Pediatrics nursing is the specialized area of nursing practice concerning
with the care of children during wellness and illness.
 It includes preventive, promotive ,curative and rehabilitative care of children.

 For developed countries, child is a person aged below 16 years
 For developing countries, child is a person aged below 18 years
 The word child refers to all the various stages of growth and
development that a person goes through before attaining
adulthood.
 The stages are divided into two groups; those before birth and
those after birth.
