Esters are formed from the reaction of carboxylic acids and alcohols, with the loss of a water molecule. Their names are derived from the parent alcohol and acid, with the endings changed to -yl and -oate respectively. Esters have physical properties between their precursor alcohols and acids, such as higher boiling points than alkanes but lower than alcohols. They are soluble in both water and non-polar solvents like cyclohexane. Esters occur naturally in fruits and flowers, responsible for flavors and scents, and as fats and oils. Ethyl ethanoate is used as a solvent for printing inks and paints.
Alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons containing a carbon-carbon double bond. Common alkenes include ethene, propene, but-1-ene, and but-2-ene, which have general formulas of C2H4, C3H6, C4H8, and C4H8 respectively. Alkene molecules are planar and exist as gases, being insoluble in water but soluble in non-polar solvents like cyclohexane. Middle leadership and pedagogical leadership are central to school improvement in Scotland. Transformational leadership focuses on developing a shared vision and mobilizing others to achieve change, while pedagogical leadership emphasizes involvement in academic mission, feedback on teaching and learning, and professional development. Effective leadership requires a blended approach including elements of transformational and pedagogical styles, as well as career-long professional learning that is collaborative, research-based, and focused on school and pupil improvement. Culture is also a key driver, requiring resolute leadership, collaborative capacity-building, and precision in pedagogy rather than prescription.

21st Century Leadership
Editor's Notes
Slide 1
Welcome all and congratulate them on their appointment as principal. Acknowledge that there may be some people who have attended some previous Misneach sessions or who have been in the position of Principal for a short time but majority are about to begin in September.
It may also be useful to ask how many have been appointed within their own school and how many are going to a new school.
Invite each person to give their name and school and whether new to the school or not.
We will then look at the Misneach Programme within that context and outline the overall aims for Misneach.
Briefly explain the structure and content of the modules of this Misneach session.
Then we will begin the “Unpacking Leadership” module
LDS Mission statement. Comments may include the fact that the team was set up in 2002 and is a joint primary-post primary initiative and includes full-time and part-time(Associate) members. The team has now been expanded and will comprise 18 full time and over 60 part-time members in 2007-2008.
The National Co-ordinator is Paddy Flood.
While well aware that the leadership roles of Principal and Deputy require administrative and managerial tasks, we must remember that learning is at the heart of everything we do in school and Principals and Deputy should see themselves as leaders of learning. It applies not only to student learning, but also to supporting and developing the learning of staff, as well as modelling it themselves!
Briefly outline the existing programmes and other work done by LDS.
You may remind participants of the brochure that was sent around to all schools in May and also that there is information available on the website.
Generally, Tánaiste’s participants are in their first or second year in the role of Deputy and Forbairt particpants have completed at least 3 years.
We will introduce them to LDS LIVE and possibly invite any participants who would like to explore the on-line element of the programme to attend a separate session for training and give them their passwords and User names to set them up.

The Misneach Programme
Rationale and Overview:-
Develop a leadership vision and style true to the values of the school
Develop professional management skills
Misneach aims to:-
Support principals in effectively leading their schools
Develop skills for leading and managing the school as an organisation
Build competencies in the area of working with people
Extend knowledge in a wide variety of areas
Provide opportunities to share good practice and create effective learning networks.
Expand on each of these. This is currently being revised by LDS with a view to having a nationally agreed profile. Revised headings being considered are:
Leading self and others
Leading the organisation
Leading in the community
Leading learning
Leading change
It is envisaged that the revised profile document will outline some qualities/dispositions for leadership and that each of these headings will be expanded to address knowledge, skills and practices.
This type of model is in use in many countries (sometimes called standards for school leadership) – however LDS wish to create a profile that will be specific to the Irish context and that will be useful in terms of developing leadership capacity, selection and recruitment of leaders and designing and delivery professional development. The education partners are consulted on an on-going basis.
School Leadership – A Profile (LDS 2002)Misneach Modules (Current)
The Misneach programme is based on the Profile and the modules generally correspond with the 4 strands. Each residential session addresses elements from these strands but Misneach is more than a set of modules – it is a programme which offers opportunities to share views and experience with colleagues, find support from facilitators and colleagues and raise particular issues of concern throughout the course of the programme. The on-line and mentoring (see next slide) elements provide for on-going contact with colleagues, members of LDS team and experienced principals (Mentors). There are also opportunities for participants to make suggestions as to what they would like included in the programme. Links with other agencies are made, as appropriate.
LDS work on developing the profile (see previous slide) will inform the development of the Misneach programme over time, as will emerging issues from research (including the OECD) and experience from other programmes and courses (e.g. Middle leadership and Tóraíocht)
Ask participants to reflect briefly on this slide. Leadership development is an dynamic and evolving process – are there gaps in this framework? Are there other issues you would like to see addressed?
Should some elements be prioritised? Does each strand require the same amount of time?
The purpose of LIVE is to support each other in our work and our learning. It aims to build communities of learning. It gives you a convenient way of keeping in touch and networking with colleagues in between the residential sessions.
This slide is intended to encourage the use of LDS LIVE blog.
The discussion forum can be used to share ideas, work (e.g. Policies), advice, ideas about how to get work done, or simply as a sounding board or a forum for letting off steam!
This slide and the next one give a few sample quotes from the blogs (0708). They can be read and commented on. Some of these issues will be raised for further discussion on Tuesday morning in the “Story of a new Principal” and “Mentoring” sessions.
Key outcomes of this session, Tús Maith:

to develop understanding of the concepts of leadership, management and administration, and the differences between them
to explore the importance of good relationships, including basic skills of communication and conflict management
