WHY STUDYING THIS COURSE
Mobile communication size!!!
There are TWO aspects of mobile computing
User mobility :- User communicate "anytime", Anywhere, with anyone.
Device Portability:- Device can be connected anytime, anywhere to network
Mobile computing systems
Mobile computing systems are computing systems that may be easily moved
physically and whose computing capabilities may be used while they are being
moved.
Examples are laptops, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and mobile phones.
HOW TO DISTINGUISH MOBILE COMPUTING
SYSTEMS FROM OTHER COMPUTING SYSTEMS
Tasks that they are designed to perform,
The way that they are designed,
The way in which they are operated.
these added functionalities are the reason for separately characterizing mobile computing systems.
THE CONCEPTS OF MOBILE COMPUTING
The main concept of mobile computing involves
Mobile communication Network
 Mobile hardware
 Mobile software
Mobile communication
• Refers to the infrastructure put in place to ensure that seamless and
reliable communication goes on.
• These would include devices such as protocols, services, bandwidth,
and portals necessary to facilitate and support the stated services.
Mobile communications refers to a form
of communications which does not
depend on a physical connection
between the sender and receiver. It
facilitates the users to move from one
physical location to another during
communication.
Mobile hardware
• Includes mobile devices or device components that receive or access the service of
mobility.
• They would range from portable laptops, smartphones, tablet Pc's, Personal Digital
Assistants.
• These devices will have a receptor medium that is capable of sensing and receiving
signals.
• These devices use an existing and established
network to operate on. a wireless network
• These devices are configured to operate in
full duplex, (they are capable of sending and
receiving signals at the same time)..
Mobile software
• Is the actual program that runs on the mobile hardware.
• A mobile Software, most commonly referred to as an app, is a type of application
software designed to run on a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet
computer.
• Mobile Software frequently serve to provide users
with similar services to those accessed on PCs.
A Brief History of Mobile Computing
First mobile storage systems can be traced back only as far as the advent of the age of electronics.
Abacus : Small size and portable, calculating only, no storage or interchange information.
Mobile communication
THE DIMENSIONS OF MOBILITY
• We will used the term the dimensions of mobility to describe the set
of properties that distinguishes the mobile computing system from
the stationary computing system
• Therefore, we need to look at those elements that are outside of the
stationary computing, these added dimensions will help us pick out
variables that in turn allow us to divide and conquer the problems of
mobile computing.
ADDED DIMENSIONS OF MOBILE COMPUTING
1. location awareness,
2. network connectivity quality of service (QOS),
3. limited device capabilities
(particularly storage and CPU),
4. limited power supply,
5. support for a wide variety of user interfaces,
6. platform proliferation, and
7. active transactions

Editor's Notes

  1. s small size and portability, namely storage and interchange of information Connectivity to the network, however, is not a prerequisite for being a mobile computing system. Dating from the late 1960s,
