Attackboard rebuilds state machines from packet dependency traces to generate traffic, greatly reducing storage overhead while maintaining accuracy. It extracts packet arrival patterns to reconstruct state machines, called attackboards, for each processing element. These attackboards are then used to drive traffic simulation at runtime instead of storing large traces. Attackboard achieves better tradeoffs between accuracy, size, and simulation time compared to previous trace-based approaches.
On the End-to-End Traffic Prediction in the On-Chip Networks
This document proposes a hardware design called the Network Traffic Prediction Table (NTPT) to recognize and predict end-to-end traffic patterns in on-chip networks. The NTPT uses both a last value predictor and a pattern-oriented predictor, selected by a hardware selector, to predict traffic with good accuracy using low hardware overhead. Evaluations on a TILE64 multicore system show the NTPT achieves better prediction accuracy than using each predictor alone, with a small area overhead of only 0.11% in a TILE64 system and 0.017% in an AsAP system. Future work will apply predicted traffic patterns to injection rate control and dynamic voltage scaling to reduce congestion and power in on-chip networks.
Logical Time
This document discusses logical time and the happen-before relation in distributed systems. It presents the following key points:
- Logical time models the ordering of events in a distributed system based on causality, rather than physical time. It was discovered by Leslie Lamport.
- For asynchronous systems with universal reliable FIFO channels, any reordering of events that preserves the happen-before relation results in a valid execution trace.
- Assigning logical timestamps to events allows reordering events while maintaining each process's local order. This corresponds to different valid executions of the original system.
- An example shows how assigning different logical times to the same execution trace results in different, but valid, reorderings of events

Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.

Closing talk for the Performance Engineering track at Community Over Code EU (Bratislava, Slovakia, June 5 2024) https://eu.communityovercode.org/sessions/2024/why-apache-kafka-clusters-are-like-galaxies-and-other-cosmic-kafka-quandaries-explored/ Instaclustr (now part of NetApp) manages 100s of Apache Kafka clusters of many different sizes, for a variety of use cases and customers. For the last 7 years I’ve been focused outwardly on exploring Kafka application development challenges, but recently I decided to look inward and see what I could discover about the performance, scalability and resource characteristics of the Kafka clusters themselves. Using a suite of Performance Engineering techniques, I will reveal some surprising discoveries about cosmic Kafka mysteries in our data centres, related to: cluster sizes and distribution (using Zipf’s Law), horizontal vs. vertical scalability, and predicting Kafka performance using metrics, modelling and regression techniques. These insights are relevant to Kafka developers and operators.
