25. Groundnut is a low-growing annual herb, 0.3-0.6m tall with
moderately hairy compound leaves, each having two pairs of
opposite leaflets. The flowers are 5-7cm long, yellow and sessile
and develop singly or in clusters of two to four.
The five fused sepals form a long calyx tube, often mistaken for a
pedicel. The papilionaceous corolla and staminal column
(consisting of ten monoadelphous stamens) are adnate at the
base and inserted on the rim of the calyx tube. The
monocarpellary ovary is surmounted by a long filiform style.
