The Future Of Data Visualization
with Gert Franke
OVERVIEW
Data visualization has become increasingly popular over the last few years. Many tools nowadays include some kind of data visualization which gives you insight in usage, the best possible way to travel, the best product offering, etc. Data visualization seems to be a powerful solution for summarising information in a world where the amount of information targeted towards us is increasing every day. But is this the holy grail for processing information? What new possibilities does visualising data provide us? What is the best possible way to present and interact with these data visualizations?
In this talk Gert Franke will briefly show where data visualization comes from, how it now influences our daily life, what the potential of data visualization is and what the future of data visualization might look like.
OBJECTIVE
Show the history, potential and future of data visualization.
TARGET AUDIENCE
People that want to understand the possibilities of interactive data visualizations.
FIVE THINGS AUDIENCE MEMBERS WILL LEARN
The history of data visualization
The reasons why data visualization became so hot the last few years
The potential of data visualization
The things we have to be aware of when creating (interactive) data visualizations
What might the future look like with the use of data visualization
Increasing the Use and Value of Earth Science Data and InformationAmazon Web Services
The Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) is a nonprofit member organization supported by NASA, NOAA, and USGS, with a belief that the quality of life, economic opportunities, and stewardship of the planet are enhanced by regular use of timely, scientifically sound Earth science data. Many agencies, academic institutions, and scientists rarely have the resources and expertise to explore computationally intensive Earth science research in the cloud. Still, the opportunity is within reach. Through small grant funding, AWS Cloud research credits, and community input, ESIP’s lab supports projects aimed at adopting community-accepted best practices in scientific data management and analysis. In this session we highlight several lab projects, including how one team is leveraging the Pangeo project on AWS to build an open-source pipeline to infer snow cover at meter-scale resolution from CubeSat data, using machine learning.

SDSC Technology Forum: Increasing the Impact of High Resolution Topography Da...OpenTopography Facility
High-resolution topography is a powerful tool for studying the Earth's surface, vegetation, and urban landscapes, with broad scientific, engineering, and educational-based applications. Over the past decade, there has been dramatic growth in the acquisition of these data for scientific, environmental, engineering and planning purposes. In the US, the U.S. Geological Society is undertaking the 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) to map the entire lower 48 with lidar by 2023.
The richness of these topography datasets make them extremely valuable beyond the application that drove their acquisition and thus are of interest to a large and varied user community. A cyberinfrastructure platform that enables users to efficiently discover, access and process these massive volumes of data increases the impact of investments in collection of the data and catalyzes scientific discovery as well as informs critical decisions that are made across our Nation every day that depend on elevation data, ranging from immediate safety of life, property, and environment to long term planning for infrastructure projects.
Join us to hear about the motivations, technology, and data assets behind the National Science Foundation funded OpenTopography platform, which aims to democratize access to high resolution topographic data. OpenTopography’s innovation is in co-locating massive volumes of topographic data with processing tools that enable users with varied expertise and application domains to quickly and easily access and process data, to enable innovation and decision making.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. Whatiselevationdata?
Elevation refersto the height (usually expressedin meters) orvertical
distance of a point orobject above a specific reference point, typically
the Earth'ssurface. It isa fundamental concept in geography, geology,
andcartography, essential forunderstanding the three-dimensional
nature of ourplanet.
Elevation data, often representedin digital format, providesa detailed
andaccurate depiction of Earth'stopography. Thisdata iscrucial fora
wide range of applications, from urban planning andlandmanagement
to environmental monitoring anddisasterpreparedness.
Thistype of data istypically acquiredthrough variousmethods,
including satellite-basedremote sensing, aerial surveys, andground-
basedmeasurements. The result isa digital elevation model (DEM), a
grid-like representation of Earth'ssurface elevations.

Whatistheuseofelevationdata?
A study from McGill University, Montreal, hasrevealedthat wildfiresin
the western part of the USA have startedcreeping to higherelevations
overthe last 50 yearsorso.
It hasalso been observedthat lowerelevationsare more prone to
rampant wildfires. These kindsof observationscan be crucial for
disasterprediction andmanagement.
These are just a few examplesof how elevation affectsmajornatural
events.
Elevation influencesa lot of otherenvironmental occurrences, andthat
includesairquality andwildfires. Therefore, when usedtogether, these
datasetsmutually enhance theiractionability andbecome primedto
provide betterandricherinsightsinto what isactually the state of the
environment.
Asourworldbecomesincreasingly interconnected, elevation data plays
a pivotal role in ensuring accurate navigation, predicting natural
disasterslike floodsandlandslides, andoptimizing infrastructure
development.
With the growing importance of understanding Earth'stopography,
elevation data continuesto empowerinnovation anddecision-making
acrossa multitude of industriesanddisciplines.
