• To consider the evolution of the media historically

• We WILL move around A LOT!
• We WILL do lots of group work and activities
• We will do a lot of talking / reading aloud etc…
• We will express a range of different opinions and ideas
• We will always listen to each other respectfully
• We might start with different knowledge and
experience of the subject
• We might not always feel confident with new ideas or
skills, we need to make mistakes and get things wrong
to learn!

• You will have 2 mins to find out

1. Favourite thing to eat at breakfast
OR favourite drink
2. Favourite artist, song or TV
programme
3. One other random fact!

these terms.

• Communication
channels through
which information is
delivered to audiences
• Media: includes every
broadcasting and
narrow casting
medium such as print,
television, radio and
online.
• Media is plural of
medium - can take
plural or singular verb
MASS
MEDIA
• A means of public
communication
reaching a large
or mass audience
MEDIA
CONTENT
• ideas, information and
experiences
communicated by the
media
• What’s ‘in’ the media
– so what we see for
e.g. an episode of
Eastenders, an
Instagram account
etc…
Formal Definitions
MEDIUM
• A medium is a specific
source or channel through
which information or data
can be communicated.
There are 4 mediums in
the mass media:
Moving Image
Print
Radio broadcast
Digital Media
MEDIA FORM
A media form refers to
the different formats that
media texts are produced
in.
There are Nine Media
Forms:
Magazines
Newspapers
Television
Radio
Film
Online
Marketing and advertising
Music videos
Video games

the correct historical
place.

Lesson Aims • To welcome you to set 2 and the Media Course • To clarify what you will study and when • To introduce how you will be assessed and the marking guidelines • To have time to get to know one another • To introduce some key media terms with definitions • To consider the evolution of the media historically • To make some predictions about the future of the Media

Some things to expect in my classes… • We WILL move around A LOT! • We WILL do lots of group work and activities • We will do a lot of talking / reading aloud etc… • We will express a range of different opinions and ideas • We will always listen to each other respectfully • We might start with different knowledge and experience of the subject • We might not always feel confident with new ideas or skills, we need to make mistakes and get things wrong to learn!

Getting to know each other… Activity 2 Find somebody who? • Work your way around the room talking to each other • Find somebody who does / has any of the things on the worksheet • A different name for each if you can! Activity 1 Getting to know you! • You will be given a number 1 or 2 • You will have 2 mins to find out the following: 1. Favourite thing to eat at breakfast OR favourite drink 2. Favourite artist, song or TV programme 3. One other random fact! Note down each person’s answers Make sure you say the same thing each time you are asked the same question!

  • 14. Formal Definitions Let’s have a look at some ‘formal’ definitions for these terms. Add any ideas here that you haven’t already got in your notes… MEDIA • Communication channels through which information is delivered to audiences • Media: includes every broadcasting and narrow casting medium such as print, television, radio and online. • Media is plural of medium - can take plural or singular verb MASS MEDIA • A means of public communication reaching a large or mass audience MEDIA CONTENT • ideas, information and experiences communicated by the media • What’s ‘in’ the media – so what we see for e.g. an episode of Eastenders, an Instagram account etc…
  • 15. Formal Definitions MEDIUM • A medium is a specific source or channel through which information or data can be communicated. There are 4 mediums in the mass media: Moving Image Print Radio broadcast Digital Media MEDIA FORM A media form refers to the different formats that media texts are produced in. There are Nine Media Forms: Magazines Newspapers Television Radio Film Online Marketing and advertising Music videos Video games In pairs, decide what you think ‘medium’, ‘media form’ and ‘media text’ mean MEDIA TEXT • A media text is a single product. For example: Vogue Magazine The Sun Love Island BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show TASK: come up with an example of a media text for each of the media forms left

  • 18. History of media • 200 BC paper is invented in China • Historical records and stories can be recorded and stored
  • 19. History of media • 1455 Gutenberg invents the printing press • Literacy spreads throughout Europe
  • 20. history of media • 1640 - first commercial newspaper published • 1666 The London Gazette published - first newspaper in Britain • British population could find out about important events • Mass communication has started

  • 22. History of media • 1814 photography developed as a way of recording people and events • First published photo of Battle of Antietam 1862 • Curious people stared for hours at the photos
  • 23. history of media • 1843 - first telegraph is sent • text communication breaks the distance barrier • first example of ‘instant messages’ • until this time, the maximum speed information could travel was 35mph!

  • 25. history of media • 1877 Thomas Edison invents home audio
  • 26. history of media • 1889 Kodak founded • Began developing the first commercial camera
  • 27. history of media • 1894 Tesla invents wireless transmission • Allows for instant transmission of mass communication
  • 28. history of media • 1898 first publicly shown film in London • Lumiere Brothers • Screening took place at what is now Westminster University on Regent Street • Film scared the audience - many left the cinema screaming
  • 29. history of media • 1910 Kodak release the Box Brownie - first commercial camera • Photographs more widely used in print material • History being recorded through still images and shared

  • 31. history of media • From then on the media and mass communication developed on a huge scale • 1920s - the first ‘talkies’ replaced ‘silent’ films • Turned actors into national and international celebrities

  • 35. H i sto r y o f t h e m e d i a : re s e a rc h a c t i v i t y Working in pairs 1. Research your assigned media or form. 2. Use the Internet to find out as much as you can. 3. Write key facts on to your laminate (no more than 4). 4. Present your findings to the class and place the laminate on timeline in the correct historical place.
  • 36. Future of media Working in small groups Task 1: Discuss, and note down, how many more media forms / mediums / texts have occurred since 2004 to present Task 2: Discuss, and note down, what predictions you have about the mass media in the future. What will it look like? What will we be able to do?
