This 2 hour per week unit on introduction to business focuses on applying English language skills within a business context. Students will develop business vocabulary, explore key business functions, and participate in business scenario projects. Assessment will be based on individual and group performance in scenarios, including written reports, presentations, and role-plays. The unit will use a variety of business texts and internet resources rather than a single textbook.

Intro To Business Unit Outline
- 1. Unit title: L3 Anglais: 'Introduction to Business' Frequency: 2 hours per week in each semester. Tutor: Tony JOLLEY Pre-existing knowledge etc: successful completion of L2; reasonable fluency in speaking, listening, and writing in English; interest in applying English within a business context; motivation to attend and participate individually and engage in teamwork. Learning outcomes: application of existing English capabilities within a business/ commercial context; development and refinement of Business English vocabulary & terminology and building confidence in its use within a range of realistic work environment scenarios and 'live' projects. Development of knowledge and understanding of key business functions such as: research, planning and development, marketing, HRM etc. Resources. Given the sheer scale of business activity and the proliferation of 'introduction to business' texts, we will not be relying on any one text: the library offers a considerable range of business texts in both French and English. In addition, the internet provides a range of freely available and detailed resources which may be used at will. Texts potentially to be referred to may include: • Needle,D. (2000) Business in Context: An Introduction to Business and Its Environment. Thomson Learning; 3rd Revised edition • Johnson,G, Scholes,K & Whittington,R, (2006) Exploring Corporate Strategy. Pearson. • Kotler,P, Armstrong,G et.al. (2008) Principles of Marketing. FT / Prentice Hall • Beech,J & Chadwick, C (2006) The Business of Tourism Management. Pearson Assessment. Students and tutor (in role) will participate in a range of 'business scenarios' - perhaps two in each semester - (one element of which will be the development, promotion and management of a real 'event' / conference). Scenarios are set to be delivered on a 'block' basis consisting of: • introduction, set-up, resources and keynote mini-lectures to provide the 'business tools' which will be required at the points that they will be needed. • supporting students with their research, development, analysis, evaluation and the preparation of their presentations/reports etc • student presentations, reports and role-plays • tutor analysis and feedback Marks will normally be awarded to students in each block. In most cases this will involve: • a team/group element based upon the degree of achievement of the scenario task set (maximum 40% of the mark) • an individual element (minimum of 60% of the mark) based upon the quality of personal contribution, be it in terms of the: o written o oral o organisational / participative o creative This unit will be examined by coursework only. There will be no examination, by reason of the fact that that participation in live scenarios provides a rich, multi-dimensional assessment opportunity whereas exams are necessarily limited vehicles for assessment.
