For accurate imaging, drone photos need to be stitched together and corrected for lens distortions, camera attitude, and georeferenced to survey control points on the ground in order to eliminate geospatial errors.

The document presents two types of robotic manipulators: a PPRR manipulator that can be positioned anywhere in its workspace to trace ellipses of different weights, and a 4RRR parallel manipulator with a rhombic link structure that can trace circles and ellipses through inverse kinematics and varying simulation parameters like link lengths and angles. Key implementation details are solving the differential equations through Runge-Kutta methods for the PPRR and using the null space for velocity-level kinematics in the 4RRR.

Drones have become widely used in agriculture for imaging and data collection purposes. They can capture high resolution images (1.1 inch resolution) over large areas (quarter sections of 160 acres or larger) to assess crop health and monitor fields. For accurate imaging, drone photos need to be stitched together and corrected for lens distortions, camera attitude, and georeferenced to survey control points on the ground in order to eliminate geospatial errors.

This paper discusses the vision/manipulation technology where a dual-arm manipulator first picks up an object from the pile, then regrasps it from the right hand to the left hand, and finally places it to the fixture. We especially focus on the grasp/manipulation planner for a dual-arm manipulator. Here, our grasp planner is well applied for objects which can be approximated by multiple cylinders. Our pick-and-place planner can quickly find a robot motion with regrasp. We also explain our vision technology to measure the position/orientation of an object. To show the effectiveness of our proposed approach, we show an experimental result of a dual-arm manipulator.

Manlike machines have fascinated humans since ancient times. The modern robots start to take shape with the industrial revolution. In the 20th century robots were mostly industrial machines you would see in factories, like car factories.
Today, robots can have sensors, vision, they can hear and understand. They can connect to the cloud for more information. However, we are still in the early stages of robotics and robots will need to go a long way to become useful as a ubiquitous general purpose devices.

Opportunity analysis project

This led to modifying the prototype to include blimp-refueled quadcopters. The system is technically feasible and could efficiently execute various energy missions. A case study found the system could save a company over 25k euros per daily inspection mission compared to manned helicopters currently used. The energy sector in Greece represents a 100 million euro market for activities UAVs could assist with.
Drones and their Increasing Number of Applications
These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled analyzing hi-tech opportunities to analyze how drones are becoming economic feasible for an increasing number of applications as their costs fall. The costs of drones are falling as the costs of various ICs (controllers, GPS) and MEMS sensors rapidly fall, their performance rises (e.g., accuracy of GPS) and as the cost of carbon fibers fall at a somewhat slower pace than do ICs and MEMS. These falling costs are making drones economically feasible for a number of applications such as producing movies, TV reporting, surveillance, and delivery.

UAV Final Poster

Apps Break Data
How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?
