Moving from an on-premises environment into AWS is just the start of the journey towards cost optimisation. In this session we’ll look at a range of ways in which our customers can understand their costs and increase their return-on-investment: building the business case; selecting the right models for the right workloads; benefiting from tiered pricing aggregation; using data to drive the choice of AWS services; implementation of intelligent auto-scaling; and, where appropriate, re-platforming to make use of new architectural patterns such as Serverless.
Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework for Azure: Governance ConversationNicholas Vossburg
This document outlines Microsoft's Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF) governance model for governing cloud adoption. It recommends starting with an assessment of the current state and future vision. Then establish a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) for governance using core Azure services like management groups, subscriptions, resource groups, Azure Policy and role-based access control. The MVP should focus on key areas like resource tagging, grouping and security baselines. Governance then evolves by maturing the MVP with each cloud release to better align with cloud adoption and IT functions.
This document discusses cost optimization strategies on AWS. It provides examples of cost savings achieved by companies that migrated applications to AWS including a 14 million dollar annual savings for GE. It outlines approaches for architecting efficiently for cost, optimizing usage costs over time, and taking advantage of AWS pricing benefits like reserved instances, spot instances, and different storage options. The document emphasizes optimizing through proactive monitoring and billing tools, leveraging the various EC2 pricing plans, and combining options for further savings.
The document discusses strategies for optimizing the total cost of ownership (TCO) of cloud infrastructure on AWS compared to on-premises infrastructure. It notes that on-premises infrastructure is typically underutilized and built to support peak capacity rather than average usage. AWS offers several ways to reduce TCO through pay-as-you-go pricing, reserved instances, spot instances, and economies of scale. The document outlines five pillars of cost optimization on AWS: right-sizing instances, increasing elasticity, monitoring usage, choosing the right pricing model, and matching usage to appropriate storage classes.

Design Patterns for Distributed Systems in Azure Kubernetes ServiceStefano Tempesta
Containers and container orchestrators have fundamentally changed the way we look at distributed systems. When in the past developers had to build these systems nearly from scratch, resulting in each architecture be sort of unique and not repeatable, we now have infrastructure and interface elements for designing and deploying services and application on distributed systems using reusable patterns for micro-service architectures and containerized components. This session describes implementation design patterns for deployment of containerized applications on Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) that meet requirements for availability, reliability and scalability. Among the patterns presented, along with practical code samples for AKS, there is Replicated Load-Balanced Services, Sharded Services and the Scatter Gather pattern.
Sentiment analysis is a special case of text mining that is increasingly important in business intelligence and social media analysis. In this session, we’ll build an experiment for sentiment analysis of conversations in Microsoft Teams to measure the overall feeling of engagement of your teams. For example, sentiment analysis of comments can help organisations monitor appreciation and utilisation of their IP (Intellectual Property), or help users identify opinion polarity before accessing a resource. The output predictions can be aggregated over specific tags containing a certain keyword, in order to find out the overall sentiment for each element of the taxonomy, and lastly consumed by analytical tools such as Power BI.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
