1. INTRODUCTION

such a friendship, dreams, hope, ill and manymore. This books also
adapted into movie with the same title in 2014.
2. PURPOSE OF THE
STUDY
The purposes on this study are:
1. To understand the themes of the novel.
2. To appreciate a work of literature.
3. SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this study is the analysis of themes in a
novel entitled The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.
4. BIOGRAPHY OF JOHN
GREEN
John Michael Green was born on August 24, 1977, to Mike and Sydney
Green in Indianapolis. He received his early education from Lake
Highland Preparatory School and Indian Springs School. His experience
of school was similar to other social outcasts who get bullied by arrogant
people. He earned double graduation degrees in English and Religious
Studies from Kenyon College. Green wrote numerous reviews on literary
fictions mostly concerning conjoined twins or religion of Islam.
5. SUMMARY OF THE
NOVEL
Hazel Grace got Lung cancer since she was 9th years old. At 17th of her age, her mother sent
her in to religious community for cancer so she could have some productive activities. At that
place, she met two people Isaac and August Water who become her best friend until the end of
the story. Hazel and August became a lover, they share their dreams and hobbies and their
interests. August always tried to make her dreams and hope came true; they went to Amsterdam
to meet someone who really inspired her. In the end of story, August died because of his cancer
and left Hazel and Isaac bt they didn’t regret the things they had done. Meanwhile, they were very
grateful because they met at the right time. Basically this novel tells us about hope, dreams,
friendship, love, family and many thing.
6. DISCUSSION
FAMILY
The fungsion of parents really appears here. All of those kids have parents who
love them and are terrified for them. Their parents hovel over them at every turn
and stitch pillows with religious phrases on the to find solace. They also tried to
accede their kids dreams and hope.
“I went to Support Group for the same reason that I’d once allowed nurses with a
mere eighteen months of graduate education to poison me with exotically named
chemicals: I wanted to make my parents happy. There is only one thing in this
world shittier than biting it from cancer when you’re sixteen, and that’s having a
kid who bites it from cancer”(1.28)
Hazel may be grumpy teen, but despite it, she still goes to Support
Group because she remember her parents and try to make them
statisfied.
“You are not a grenade, not to us. Thinking about you dying makes us sad, Hazel, but you are
not a grenade. You are amazing. You can’t know, sweetie, because you’ve never had a baby become
a brilliant young reader with a side interest in horrible television shows, but the joy you bring us is
so much greater than the sadness we feel about your illness.”(6.98)
This conversation shows how much Hazel means to their parents. They dont think
abot how bad Hazel has. No matter how hard the situation, they will still love Hazel.
• SUFFERING
Hazel, August and Isaac al endure quite a bit of physical and emotional
pain. But most thematically significant type of pain in this novel is that
caused by the death of a loved one, and it’s this variety that the novel
suggests is the most necessary. From all of pain, we learn something, every
time we suffer for something we love.
“That’s the thing about pain,” Augustus said, and then glanced back at me. “It
demands to be felt.” (4.110)
People talk about the courage of cancer patients, and I do not deny that courage. I
had been poked and stabbed and poisoned for years, and still I trod on. But make
no mistake: In that moment, I would have been very, very happy to die.(7.4)
Hazel recognizes how tough it is to be a cancer kid. And that means
she also knows how courageous she has been.
LOVE
Hazel and August attraction is undoubted, their compatibility uncanny, and bye the
end, we see that theri love for each other in undeniable. We can see the rong feeling
between them and all the chances they have. The spend it worth.
“I’m in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is
inevitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been
returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and I am in love
with you.” (10.128)
the oblivion they are talking about here is much more immitent and shows us a
strong feeling and hope August has for Hazel
I knew why he hadn’t said anything, of course: the same reason I hadn’t wanted him to see me in the
ICU. I couldn’t be mad at him for even a moment, and only now that I loved a grenade did I understand
the foolishness of trying to save others from my own impending fragmentation: I couldn’t unlove Augustus
Waters. And I didn’t want to.(13.34)
Maybe Hazel is a grenade. Buy finally she realizes that it doesn’t matter. When you loved
someone, they could be any short of weapon and you’d still love them.
