Finding the right work to do: Lessons learnt from a year at a startupBeth Aitman
What really matters in tech writing? What should our goals be? How can we do the right thing for our users, and also show our companies that we’re valuable?
Technical writers tend to be stretched thin: there’s often more that we want to do than we ever possibly have time for. And because there’s too much to do, we have to compromise. Instead of prioritising based on who shouts the loudest, or what release goes out this week, you can prioritise based on what’s really important: what makes life better for our users.
Based on the lessons learnt from a year of working in a (sometimes chaotic) tech startup, this talk will discuss what the real aims of technical writing are, how to decide what work is actually useful, and how to demonstrate that your work makes a difference.
You will learn:
- how to discover what problems you should really work on
- ways to approach those problems that minimize wasted work
- how to tell whether what you’re doing is actually working for users

3. Answers for Fresher
• Sir, I am a fresher and energetic. I have no problem to do work overtime and late nights,
weekends. But I will try my best to complete my work within the working hours.
• Sir, no problem in working nights and weekends because in my opinion if we want to be
successful then we should be honest to our work for bright future, as we all know that
"Successful leaders see the opportunity in every difficulty rather than the difficulty in
every opportunity“
• Yes I'm ready to work at night provided if you assure me of women security, And for
weekends to be frank I love to spend time with friends but yes whenever there is urgent
situations I m ready to work for the organization even in weekends and I promise to give
you my 100 %.
4. Answers for Fresher
• Sir, in this competitive world it is quite common working in night shifts, so
I don't mind working in night shifts, anyhow company will provide security
but if there is a choice, I will prefer day shift. And no one will tell you to do
work in weekends without any pending or urgent work. So at that point of
time if my presence is important definitely I will work without having
second thought.
• Whenever there is an urgent work or pending work it is my responsibility to
complete the task assigned to me. In that case I don't mind for working at
nights and weekends. :)
5. Answers for Experienced Professionals
• I already do work overtime. I love my job and when a project deadline is coming up,
everyone has to pull together to finish it – even if that means investing our beloved
weekends.
• I can normally work in a few nights or weekends of overtime through the month if
required to meet some deadlines. I hope projects are scoped and scheduled in such a way
that overtime and nights are not a common requirement.
• Sir, I think its more important to have a complete rest to give my best. So working in
nights is not a big deal for me, even I can overtime without any complaint. But I need
weekends to join my family and friends. As they also comes first for me. But still my
company needs my presence, I will do it with my pleasure.
