Internet technologies & hearing loss: Twitter
Twitter is a microblogging service that allows users to share short messages called tweets. Tweets can include text updates, photos, videos, and links. While originally intended as a way for users to share what they are doing with their followers, Twitter has grown to be used by celebrities, journalists, activists, and businesses to communicate and spread information quickly. For deaf users, Twitter provides a text-based alternative to verbal communication that allows them to stay connected with friends and up-to-date on news and events through following other users and organizations.
Types of hearing loss
There are several types of hearing loss that can occur depending on which part of the ear is affected. Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound cannot reach the inner ear, usually due to issues with the outer or middle ear like earwax buildup, infections, or problems with the eardrum or tiny bones that transmit sound. Sensorineural hearing loss affects the inner ear or auditory nerve, preventing sound from being interpreted by the brain, and can result from aging, noise exposure, viruses, or medications. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. Central auditory processing disorder affects the brain's ability to understand sound patterns.
Hearing Loss & Speech Sounds
Pure tone audiometry is the main method for testing hearing and involves playing pure tones through headphones while the patient presses a button when hearing sounds. There are two types of headphones: air conduction and bone conduction. An audiogram records hearing loss by plotting loudness against frequency based on results from a pure tone test. Audiograms can show typical age-related hearing loss in higher frequencies or a noise-induced "notch" at 4,000 Hz. Over time, age-related hearing loss can compound noise-induced hearing loss, resulting in a more significant loss of higher frequencies. An audiogram of speech sounds indicates which sounds a person with a given hearing loss wouldn't be able to hear without a hearing aid

Mobile Phones for Hard of Hearing people
Hearing a phone ring or having a phone near a hearing aid can cause issues for hard of hearing (HoH) people. Solutions include using vibrating phones, flashing indicators, or additional devices that flash or vibrate. To avoid interference, keep phones in pockets and use neck loops, ear loops, or Bluetooth accessories connected to hearing aids. For calls, louder phones, speakerphone, or loops can help. Text messaging, instant messaging like Skype, and relay services allow communication when hearing is difficult. Websites list assistive phones and accessories.
What is lipreading?
Lipreading, also called speechreading, involves using visual cues from a speaker's face, including lip movements and facial expressions, to understand speech. Only 30-40% of speech sounds can be understood from lipreading alone. Successful lipreaders use additional contextual clues from gestures, body language, situational context, and their own knowledge of language and grammar to fill in the gaps and deduce the full meaning of an utterance. Mastering lipreading requires practice at integrating these various visual and linguistic cues.
