Starting in 2023, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) will require institutes and researchers receiving funding to include a Data Management Plan (DMP) in their grant applications, including the making their data publicly available. Similar mandates are already in place in Europe, for example a DMP is mandatory in Horizon Europe projects involving data.
Policy is one thing - practice is quite another. How do we provide the necessary information, guidance and advice for our bioscientists, researchers, data stewards and project managers? There are numerous repositories and standards. Which is best? What are the challenges at each step of the data lifecycle? How should different types of data? What tools are available? Research Data Management advice is often too general to be useful and specific information is fragmented and hard to find.
ELIXIR, the pan-national European Research Infrastructure for Life Science data, aims to enable research projects to operate “FAIR data first”. ELIXIR supports researchers across their whole RDM lifecycle, navigating the complexity of a data ecosystem that bridges from local cyberinfrastructures to pan-national archives and across bio-domains.
The ELIXIR RDMkit (https://rdmkit.elixir-europe.org (link is external)) is a toolkit built by the biosciences community, for the biosciences community to provide the RDM information they need. It is a framework for advice and best practice for RDM and acts as a hub of RDM information, with links to tool registries, training materials, standards, and databases, and to services that offer deeper knowledge for DMP planning and FAIR-ification practices.
Launched in March 2021, over 120 contributors have provided nearly 100 pages of content and links to more than 300 tools. Content covers the data lifecycle and specialized domains in biology, national considerations and examples of “tool assemblies” developed to support RDM. It has been accessed by over 123 countries, and the top of the access list is … the United States.
The RDMkit is already a recommended resource of the European Commission. The platform, editorial, and contributor methods helped build a specialized sister toolkit for infectious diseases as part of the recently launched BY-COVID project. The toolkit’s platform is the simplest we could manage - built on plain GitHub - and the whole development and contribution approach tailored to be as lightweight and sustainable as possible.
In this talk, Carole and Frederik will present the RDMkit; aims and context, content, community management, how folks can contribute, and our future plans and potential prospects for trans-Atlantic cooperation.
Data policy must be partnered with data practice. Our researchers need to be the best informed in order to meet these new data management and data sharing mandates.

The OSF provides an open source, structured environment where researchers from all over the world, using their own tools and processes, can collaborate openly, transparently, and effectively.

Improving Integrity, Transparency, and Reproducibility Through Connection of ...Andrew Sallans
The Center for Open Science (COS) was founded as a non-profit technology start-up in 2013 with the goal of improving transparency and reproducibility by connecting the scholarly workflow. COS achieves this goal through the development of a free, open source web application called the Open Science Framework (OSF), providing features like file sharing and citing, persistent urls, provenance tracking, and automated versioning. Initial workflow API connections focused on storage services and included Figshare, GitHub, Amazon S3, Dropbox, and Dataverse. The team is now working to connect other parts of the workflow with services like DMPTool, Databib/re3data, and Databrary. This session will introduce the core architecture and the problems that it solves, and illustrate how connecting services can benefit everyone involved in supporting the research ecosystem. COS is funded through the generosity of grants from the Laura and John Arnold Foundation, the John Templeton Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Association of Research Libraries, and others.

Open Research increases inclusivity and collaboration, improves transparency and reproducibility of research and underpins research integrity.
This workshop focuses on the benefits of practicing open research for you as a researcher, to improve discoverability and maximise access to your work and to raise your professional profile.

Sitations are the way that researchers communicate how
their work builds on and relates to the work of others and
they can be used to trace how a discovery spreads and is
used by researchers in different disciplines and countries.
Creating a truly comprehensive map of scholarship,
however, relies on having a curated machine-readable
database of citation information, where the provenance of
every citation is clear and reusable. The Initiative for Open
Citations (I4OC), a campaign launched on 6 April 2017,
sought to make publisher members of Crossref aware that
they could open up the citation metadata they already give
to Crossref simply by asking them. With the support of
major publishers and the endorsement of funders and other
organisations, more than 50% of citation data in Crossref
is now freely available, up from less than 1% before the
campaign. This provides the foundation of a well-structured,
open database of literally millions of datapoints that anyone
can query, mine, consume and explore. The presenter will
discuss the aims of the campaign, the new innovative
services that are already using the data, what more still
needs to be done and how you can support the initiative.

Two possibilities are that the percentage of positive results is inflated because negative results are much less likely to be published, and that we are pursuing our analysis freedoms to produce positive results that are not really there. These would lead to an inflation of false-positive results in the published literature.
Some evidence from bio-medical research suggests that this is occurring. Two different industrial laboratories attempted to replicate 40 or 50 basic science studies that showed positive evidence for markers for new cancer treatments or other issues in medicine. They did not select at random. Instead, they picked studies considered landmark findings. The success rates for replication were about 25% in one study and about 10% in the other. Further, some of the findings they could not replicate had spurred large literatures of hundreds of articles following up on the finding and its implications, but never having tested whether the evidence for the original finding was solid. This is a massive waste of resources.
Across the sciences, evidence like this has spurred lots of discussion and proposed actions to improve research efficiency and avoid the massive waste of resources linked to erroneous results getting in and staying in the literature, and about the culture of scientific practices that is rewarding publishing, perhaps at the expense of knowledge building. There have been a variety of suggestions for what to do. For example, the Nature article on the right suggests that publishing standards should be increased for basic science research.
[It is not in my interest to replicate – myself or others – to evaluate validity and improve precision in effect estimates (redundant). Replication is worth next to zero (Makel data on published replications; motivated to not call it replication; novelty is supreme – zero “error checking”; not in my interest to check my work, and not in your interest to check my work (let’s just each do our own thing and get rewarded for that)
Irreproducible results will get in and stay in the literature (examples from bio-med). Prinz and Begley articles (make sure to summarize accurately)
The Nature article by folks in bio-medicine is great. The solution they offer is a popular one in commentators from the other sciences -- raise publishing standards.
There’s more to it than sharing of discrete objects. Think about using this as an opportunity to increase transparency by capturing the entire workflow, and to do so while connecting tools and services that make up the parts of the workflow, not requiring people to change all of their practices at once, and providing immediate efficiencies and value to the researcher AS they comply with requirements.
Easy, right? Obviously not.

The features I’ve noted are nice and important for improving openness and reproducibility, but there are many other tools and services that researchers use as well. Our strategy is to accept that many tools are used and to connect them through the OSF.
By connecting the workflow, we can all provide researchers with significant gains in automation, efficiency, and reproducibility. Immediate value from this reinforces more changes.

Supporting these behavioral changes requires improving the full scientific ecosystem.
