Competing with Co-ops: Providing Affordable International Opportunities for E...CIEE
We all want engineering, computer, and physical science students to study abroad, but there is stiff competition for their attention and time. These students are often well-paid for domestic internships and co-ops. How can we offer affordable, experiential international programs tailored to engineers’ needs? We'll explore this issue from the perspective of university study abroad and career services offices, and exchange program administrators. Study abroad advisors, administrators, and providers are invited to participate and develop an action plan to address these issues for their own students and organizations.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

The University of Winnipeg’s Board of Regents is pleased to announce that this evening it appointed Dr. Annette Trimbee its seventh President and Vice-Chancellor, effective August 1, 2014. Dr. Trimbee has served as Deputy Minister in the Alberta government in multiple portfolios including Advanced Education and Technology (2008-2011) where she gained insight into the unique challenges and opportunities facing post-secondary institutions. She also served in the ministries of Environment, Health and Wellness, Treasury Board and Finance and is currently with Service Alberta. She’s known for her strategic thinking, innovative leadership, and relationship-building abilities.
Dr. Trimbee has strong family roots in Winnipeg, having grown up in Transcona. She graduated from UWinnipeg with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1977 and says that experience laid the foundation for her academic and career successes. “Without the financial and emotional support I received from The University of Winnipeg, I doubt I would have pursued a post-secondary education. I am a leader today because I was inspired by my UWinnipeg professors to become one.”
Dr. Trimbee received numerous scholarships including two prestigious National Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) scholarships. In 1980 she attained a Master of Science in Botany from the University of Manitoba and in 1984, a PhD in Ecology from McMaster University. She was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Alberta from 1984 to 1986. Her primary research focused on blue-green algae and the nutrient dynamics of lakes, which led her to public service and the desire to create positive change through effective public policy. She has numerous academic publications and presentations to her credit.
Dr. Trimbee says her passion for public service has now brought her home to UWinnipeg.“I like to mobilize people to work towards a common cause. The University of Winnipeg has a special role in developing leaders with a commitment to social justice. It is an innovative place and I have a strong heart and soul connection here.”
Environmental Commitment - The University was able to meet and exceed its Kyoto commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 6% below 1990 levels
Achieving UWinnipeg’s Kyoto goal is equivalent to heating approximately 55 fewer houses. UWinnipeg was the first major post-secondary institution in Manitoba to implement a systematic greenhouse gas reduction strategy. UWinnipeg’s Board of Regents made the Kyoto commitment in March 2005. Since then, the University set out to measure and report GHG emissions from buildings and fleet vehicles.
The Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex (RCESC) provides more than 30 state of the art labs and classroom space for research in areas such as biology, chemistry, environmental studies and sciences, Indigenous science, urban planning and the social sciences. Approximately 2,000 faculty, students and visitors inhabit the building daily. Earlier this month it received first place in the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)’s Technology Awards for North America. It is now entered on an international basis with projects from around the world.
The Program
The full-time program has three streams: Foundations English Stream, General English Stream and the Academic English Stream. In all streams, classes are held from Monday to Friday, with a total of 25 hours of study and cultural activities each week. Classes are offered at various levels in each stream.
Foundations Stream (Basic to Mid-Intermediate)
The Foundations English stream focuses on integrated skills. The morning classes have a strong emphasis on oral communication, vocabulary acquisition, and grammatical development which are integral skills for linguistic progress. Afternoon classes focus on grammatical structures and reading skills.
General English Stream (High-Intermediate to Low-Advanced)
The General English Stream is suitable if you wish to develop your English language skills for personal or professional reasons. Morning classes focus strongly on developing fluency in speaking and listening as well as grammar, reading, and writing. In the afternoon, students participate in a variety of seminars such as Business English, TOEFL Preparation, Conversation, Writing, and Listening and Pronunciation. Afternoon classes vary from term to term. Seminars also vary depending on the student's level of proficiency in English.
Academic English Program (High-Intermediate to Advanced)
The Academic English stream is suitable if you are interested in preparing for academic studies in English-medium institutions, either in High School, University or College. This program focuses on developing the skills that students require to be successful in an academic environment.
Students will develop all four language areas (listening / reading / writing / speaking) in order to apply them in an academic setting. Students will improve their ability to take notes, read academic material, write essays and give presentations. Students also learn vocabulary they will use in University or College courses. At the highest level of the program, students will have the opportunity to begin their University studies by taking a first year business course: " Introduction to Business I" with the support of an adjunct course specifically developed to help English Language Program students to successfully complete their University course.
With the successful completion of the highest level of the Academic English Program students have:
Met the English language proficiency requirement for all University of Winnipeg programs including degree credit programs in Arts, Science, Education and Business.
Earned 6 university credit hours that can be applied to further study at The University of Winnipeg, 3 credit hours toward an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Business Administration and 3 credit hours that are unallocated and be applied to any course of study.
REQUIRES a full 3 week volunteer placement commitment.
Students must be available for the full 3 weeks to meet the certification requirements
Students are not allowed to travel, or engage in alternate work or educational commitments that will prevent the completion of a full 3 week volunteer placement during this program
