In August 2014, it was reported that Canada disposed of 25 million tonnes of non-hazardous waste in 2010, with residential and non-residential waste decreasing by 1% and 6% respectively. The waste management industry employed over 32,000 workers and generated almost $6 billion in operating revenues. Additionally, the oil sands industry was identified as the largest solid waste producer, generating 645 million tonnes of tailings in 2008.
