ICOS: Integrated Carbon Observation System Open data to open our eyes to clim...Blue BRIDGE

ICOS is a pan-European research infrastructure (RI) for observing and understanding the greenhouse gas (GHG) balance of Europe and its adjacent regions. The major task of ICOS is to collect and make available in a transparent manner, the high-quality observational data from its state-of-the-art measurement stations. These ICOS data – from atmosphere, ecosystem and ocean stations – will contribute to research aiming to describe and understand the present state of the global carbon cycle. The Carbon Portal will be the virtual data center that present the data products and make it available. This presentation will briefly present the work of ICOS and the Carbon Portal towards open data with FAIR principles. ICOS has an open data policy with free use, requesting the user to give appropriate credit (Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 ). The Carbon Portal is developing a data catalogue using an ontology based on a semantic metadata description. This will make it possible to integrate ICOS observations with data from other RI’s as well with data of global networks. For integration, the Carbon Portal is actively following the developments of international standards for eg. metadata and data citation.

How the FAIR principles should manifest in reality is largely open to interpretation. In this presentation it is described the approach exploited in the context of the BlueBRIDGE EU project. This approach culminates in an open, flexible and rich catalogue where an ample set of research resources are expected to be seamlessly discovered and accessed by overcoming interoperability and reusability issues. Behind the catalogue there is a rich and powerful infrastructure (D4Science.org) that enacts the catalogue FAIRness by deploying and operating a set of service and facilities enabling to actually have access the catalogue items payload (beyond metadata). The presentation describes some of the prototypical patterns implemented to enable the collaborative production and publication of scientific output compliant with the Open Science and FAIR principles. OpenLayers is an open-source, highly-customizable, pluggable solution for adding street maps and GIS capabilities to any website using a well-documented JavaScript library and open standards for map data interchange with all the big players listed above (as well as some not so big, but highly specialized ones). Drupal’s contributed core OpenLayers module (and nearly 20 add-on modules) takes this ease of use one step further by integrating the basic Drupal concepts of nodes, CCK, and Views to generate detailed and functional maps with little to no coding. EPOS has been designed with the vision of creating a pan-European infrastructure for solid Earth science to support a safe and sustainable society. In accordance with this scientific vision, the EPOS mission is to integrate the diverse and advanced European Research Infrastructures for solid Earth science relying on new e-science opportunities to monitor and unravel the dynamic and complex Earth System. EPOS will enable innovative multidisciplinary research for a better understanding of the Earth’s physical and chemical processes that control earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, ground instability and tsunami as well as the processes driving tectonics and Earth’s surface dynamics. To accomplish its mission, EPOS is engaging different stakeholders, not limited to scientists, to allow the Earth sciences to open new horizons in our understanding of the planet. Through integration of data, models and facilities, EPOS will allow the Earth science community to make a step change in developing new concepts and tools for key answers to scientific and socio-economic questions concerning geo-hazards and geo-resources as well as Earth sciences applications to the environment and human welfare.

Pallikkaranai marsh which originally had an area of 50 sq km, has now shrunk to one tenth of its original extent in the last three decades. Also the marsh is highly polluted, with its unique biodiversity diminishing by day. This presentation outlines the process of preparing a restoration model for the marsh based on the principles and processes of Landscape Urbanism.

A presentation I prepared that was presented by Rob Simmonds at the Gateway Computing Environments 2010 Workshop in New Orleans on November 14, 2010. It provides an overview of a data management system that was developed for GeoChronos - an on-line collaborative platform for Earth observation scientists.
Figshare is a research data management platform that offers out-of-the-box compliance with the EPSRC mandate on open access to research data. Not only does figshare satisfy open data mandates but it also provides a world class research data dissemination platform. With private sharing and collaboration functionality, figshare for institutions provides a flexible and comprehensive end-to-end data management platform. This session will focus on how the University of Sheffield and the University of Salford have implemented figshare for institutions.
Ensuring that an organisation's digital assets are safe, secure and accessible for the long term should (in theory) be an interesting, responsible and useful role for anyone in an organisation to accept. The critical importance of digital assets, the ubiquity of digital methods and the need for people in all walks of life to have effective means to refer to persistent sources of data reinforce this notion. How is it then that long-term asset management, information lifecycle management, data curation, digital preservation (call it what you will) is often regarded as a peripheral specialist activity that it is diffcult to resource, complex to carry out, and delivers benefits that are, at best, simply an insurance policy rather than an activity that adds value to an organisation?
This presentation will examine the importance of defining clear roles for those involved with digital preservation and will consider the importance of associating this professional activity with strategic and tactical frameworks. It is likely that automated services will increasingly be required to deal with the collosal amount of digital information that will be produced and consumed over the next century and whilst the type and nature of these services are yet to be defined, we can be fairly certain of one endurng requirement, namely, that human judgement will always be needed to curate interesting and useful content for future generations.

Dr. Farrés received his M.S. in Computer Science from UPC and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Edinburgh.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
