Kristen Williams completed several art and creative projects for an integrated expressive arts class. She created collages using shapes representing winter scenes, an oil pastel drawing using primary colors, a comic strip introducing author Roald Dahl, an oil pastel drawing of her family overlaid with watercolors, a collage showing the beginning, middle and end of the story "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", and a mask made from a folder decorated with feathers and markers. She reflected that the class showed her different ways to integrate art into the classroom, from fine arts to expressive arts to digital art, and that she plans to incorporate various art forms into lessons to engage students and introduce them to new art types.

For this

I made a

Collage. I
made
collages of
different
shapes that

winter. The
pictures
used to
create the
shapes are
all winter
scenes to fit
the theme.

3. Oil pastel drawing using
primary colors
For this assignment, we
had to draw something,
only using oil pastels in
primary colors. This
activity would be great for
lessons introducing ideas
like the color wheel and
primary colors.

4. Comic Strip
For this assignment, I
made a comic strip to
introduce one of my
favorite childhood
authors, Roald Dahl. I
used a site called
Witty Comics to
create the comic
strip. I chose Roald
Dahl for this
assignment because
writing is a form of
art and he is a well
known author, who is
perfect for
elementary students,
which is the age level
that I want to teach.

5. Oil Pastel Drawing of my Family,

For this assignment, I
drew a picture of my
family, which includes
me, my parents, and my
two cats. I used oil
pastels to draw the
picture and then painted
over it with watercolors
to get the background
color.

beginning, middle, and end
of the story “The Very
Hungry Caterpillar.” These
images were made using a
collage of different colors of
construction paper.

7. Mask making
For this assignment, I made a mask out of a
folder. After cutting it out, I connected the
back on both sides, using rubber bands and
then, decorated it with feathers, markers,
and glitter glue.

8. Reflection
– I chose to use PowerPoint for this project because it is an organized way to
showcase all of the various projects we have worked on throughout the semester
and it is the method that I am most familiar with using.
– My biggest takeaway from Integrated Expressive Arts is that there are many
different ways to integrate art into your classroom. There’s fine arts, like painting
and drawing; expressive arts, like acting and dancing; and there is art that you can
create digitally, like comic strips and videos.
– I plan to incorporate integrated expressive arts into my future classroom by coming
up with lessons that utilize different forms of art. I can get to know my students and
find out what form of art they like and base lessons on those forms of art. I can also
introduce them to new forms of art that they may not have experience with yet.
