2. The raffia tie now goes through the base from the underside, across the inside of the basket and out the other side, pull to equal lengths each side.
3. I usually tie a knot at each side of the base where the raffia goes in and out to stop it slipping.
4. You now have the ipu whenua made. If you wish you can leave it plain or you may wish to decorate the outside.
5. Hapu women should not cut and weave flax, I make harakeke flowers to take to class and the women attach them to their freshly made ipu. Reshaping the bags is fine.
6. The finished wet bag needs to be taken apart and left in an airy place to dry, this may take 1-3 days depending on sunshine or room temperature.

8. To glue paua or sea shells to the lid it needs to be dry so either done at a later date, or in class I take some ready made and dry lids which I “swap” for a freshly made one.
