• The common colours in these institutions are blue, gold, black and white
• The colour gold connotes wealth and royalty which then relates to the high quality
that gold is produced which could be the same as the productions that these
institutions publish
• The colour blue connotes dreams, peacefulness and all mystical elements related
to being above (blue skies) or beneath the Earth (Blue sea)
• The colour black usually connotes darkness and evil but in the institution logos,
black resembles a base colour which is used to bring out the lighter, bold text in the
logo
• The colour white connotes light, awakening and harmony but again in the
institution logos, resembles a base colour to bring out bold, dark coloured text in
the logo
The five institutions showed below have the common convention of clouds in the
background to connote being in the clouds and being in a dream. In addition to this
the logos gives a sense to the audience that they are being transported to this
other world to view their own perspective of the film almost like being told a story
and dreaming about it.
These institutional logos share the common convention of having some sort of
peak whether it’s being on the top of a stairway (Columbia) or having
mountains with a peak on top (Summit entertainment and Paramount).
Both connotes being powerful or highly achieved/esteemed as if these
institutions are the top of the hierarchy for film production.
The Columbia logo has a woman almost like a coloured statue of Liberty
holding a beacon of light on top of a stairway which could connote the
stairway to heaven. This logo has a sense of power as the woman being in
the middle of the frame and holding light connotes a god-like figure.
The Summit logo is an example of the
use for black as a base colour as it brings
out the white text and the mountain
peak logo.
• The MGM logo has a lion idolised within somewhat of a gold
emblem around it. The lion connotes power and lots of it as it’s
acknowledged as the ‘King of the Jungle’ and is a symbol of power.
The gold decoration around the lion connotes royalty and wealth
as gold is one of the most sought for and expensive metals.
• The Warner Brothers logo has a shield like emblem with a golden
outline and lettering and a blue fill. The shield like emblem
connotes heroism as most heroes used swords and shields in the
past and the gold outline connotes high status that the institution
has.
• The 20th Century Fox logo has it’s golden logo surrounded by
spotlights. The golden logo resembles a statue which connotes
importance and high status while the spotlights connotes fame as
the spotlights resembles that of a Hollywood premiere.
