2. Logos Basics
Logos serve to represent a given company or organization through a visual image
that can be easily recognized and understood. A logo usually involves symbolized
text, symbols or both.
3. Introduction to my research
Companies, especially movie ones,
tend to want a logo of their own. They
need it to stay recognizable and
overshadow their competition.
Some companies do not have specific
image as a logo, focusing on its name
or the key letters. Like Lucasfilm or
Miramax.

● At the center of the logo stands a majestic figure, often
referred to as the "Columbia Lady" or the "Torchbearer."
She embodies the spirit of Columbia, the personification of
America, and symbolizes freedom, progress, and
enlightenment. Holding a torch high, she represents the
guiding light of creativity and innovation, leading the way
in the world of cinema.
● Behind the Torchbearer, there is often a backdrop
featuring a picturesque landscape. This landscape can
vary, but it typically includes mountains, clouds, and
sometimes a rising sun. This scenic backdrop serves as a
visual metaphor for the vast and diverse landscapes of
cinematic storytelling, suggesting that Columbia Pictures
is committed to exploring a wide range of genres, themes,
and narratives.

● At the heart of the logo is a majestic lion, famously known
as the MGM Lion or Leo the Lion. The lion has been a
symbol of strength, power, and nobility since ancient
times, and its inclusion in the logo immediately conveys a
sense of authority and majesty. The choice of a lion also
aligns with MGM's motto, "Ars Gratia Artis" (Latin for "Art
for Art's Sake"), suggesting that the studio is dedicated to
producing high-quality, artistic content.
● In many iterations of the logo, the lion is shown roaring,
with its mouth wide open and teeth bared. This dynamic
pose conveys a sense of energy, passion, and excitement,
signaling to audiences that they are about to experience
something thrilling and unforgettable. The roar serves as a
powerful auditory cue, capturing attention and building
anticipation for the films that follow. It’s actually a tiger’s
roar, since it sounds more fierce than a lion’s one.

● In the center of Mosfilm’s old soviet-era logo is the statue
of Worker and Kolhoz Woman, a powerful symbol of unity
and soviet ideology, depicting the strength and nobility of
common workers both of industry and agriculture. As one
of the most important, influential and oldest studios in the
Soviet Union Mosfilm’s choice of logo is understandable.
● The color palette of the old Soviet Mosfilm logo is typically
dominated by red, a color closely associated with
communism and the Soviet Union. Red symbolizes
revolution, sacrifice, and the struggle for social justice,
echoing the ethos of the Soviet state. Occasionally, other
colors such as gold or black may be used to accentuate
certain elements of the logo, but red remains the dominant
hue, imbuing the logo with a sense of ideological fervor
and revolutionary spirit.
