Road safety challenges
in India
Vission
To spread awareness, and alertness towards the safety of
people, property, and the environment while using roads.
Global statistics
million deaths each year
1.35
leading cause of death for
people of all ages
8th
cause of death for
children and young adults
of 5 to 29 years of age
#1
times higher death rates in low-income
countries than in high-income countries
3
Cause of road accidents
• Over speeding
• Drunken driving
• Distractions to driver
• Red light jumping
• Avoid safety gears like seat belts and helmet
• Non-adherence to lane driving and overtaking in the wrong manner
Over speeding
• An increase in speed exponentially multiplies the
risk and severity of crashes.
• At higher speeds, vehicles need more distance to
stop (braking distance).
• Vehicles moving at high speed suffer greater
impact during the crash and hence cause more
injuries.
• Ability to judge the situation will also get reduced
at higher speeds.
Drunken driving
• Alcohol impairs concentration and slows the
reaction of the human body.
• Limb takes more time to react to the instructions of
the brain.
• Hampers vision due to dizziness.
• Every increase of 0.055 of BAC will double the crash
risk.
Do not drive under the influence of alcohol !!!
Distractions while driving
• A minor distraction while driving, can cause crashes.
• Cause of distractions can be outside or inside of the
vehicle.
• The major distraction is talking on the mobile phone.
• The act of talking on the phone occupies a major portion
of the brain and a smaller part handles the driving
• This will reduce the reaction time, and affect the ability to
judge the situations.
Other distractions while driving
• Animals on the road
• Banners billboards
• Eating and drinking
• Adjusting mirror while driving
Jumping red light
Avoid safety gears like seat belts and helmet
• Wearing seat belts for four-wheelers and helmets for two-wheeler is mandatory
• When worn properly reduces the risk of death among front-seat passengers
Avoid safety gears like seat belts and helmet
01
A license doesn’t make you safe driver
About 80 percent of the accidents are caused by driver's fault:
Illiteracy
Easy license issuance
Inadequate training
Avoid safety gears like seat belts and helmet
Road sign
• Danger warning
signs
• Regulatory signs
• Informative signs
Gives
order
Gives
warning
Gives
Information
Functions of road sign
STOP Give way
Road markings
 Bare roads will lead to total vehicular confusion.
 Markings are painted on the road to direct, guide and regulate the road
user.
