5. The global burden of road
traffic deaths
The number of road traffic deaths remains around
almost 1.35 million per year, In spite of increasing
world’s population.
There has been no reduction in Death toll after
2013, specially in low/medium income countries.
However, it also indicates that to achieve
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 3.6 lot
has to be done.
6. Total worldwide death toll of Tsunami of
2004 -was about 2,30,000.
Death toll of Road Accidents is 1,37,0000 !!!
Equal to 5 Tsunamis every year on Roads.

Speeding has been a factor in over 37% of
crashes involving 16 year old.
5% decrease in speed may prevent 30%
accidents
17. Intelligent Speed Assistance
(ISA)
System aims to increase speed limit compliance.
ISA systems compare the speed of the vehicle
with the recommended safe speed at that
location.
In case of excess speed, the system gives
feedback to the driver or restricts vehicle speed.
Effectiveness - speed limit compliance
increased by - 90% in Netherlands.

5–35% of all road deaths are reported as alcohol-
related – mainly youth!!
BAC limit of 0.05 g/dl for general population, and
BAC limit of 0.02 g/dl for young or novice drivers.

“alcolocks”
Alcolocks - require the driver to take a breath
test before starting the car - If the driver fails, it
locks the ignition of the car.
Useful for people who have been convicted of
drink – driving, from re‐offending.
Effectiveness - 40‐95% reductions in drink‐drivers.

49 countries representing 2.7 billion people currently have
laws on motorcycle helmet use that align with best practice.

Ensure young driver always fastens seatbelt and checks to
make sure that passengers do too.
Most teenagers killed in car accidents are not wearing
safety belts.

belts in the country is that
seat belts crumple clothes!

The use of child restraints can lead to at least a 60%
reduction in deaths. Criteria for child restraint laws include;
• to place children until 10yr or 135 cm in a child restraint;
• a restriction to seating children in the front seat.

rollover and other loss‐ of‐control crashes.
