Distributed embodied team play, a distributed interactive pong playground zon...Robby van Delden
Intetain 2016, Presentation on work in the field of distributed exertion games, which are controlled by moving the body. People play these games together while being located at different places in the world. The novel contribution of this paper is the introduction of distributed team play in which both collocated and distributed players participate. In our Distributed Interactive Pong Playground (DIPP) players bounce a ball towards a goal by moving, walking, and running around in a 5.3 by 5.3 meter interactive playground. We investigate whether we can increase coordination in movement between players by changing the game to enforce teamwork. This was done by letting the players in a team control one end each of a shared paddle, as opposed to both players having separate paddles. Although the results should be taken with care, the comparisons do indicate that we could steer the amount of coordination between players in this way. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of distributed team play on the level of coordination. The results indicate that coordination goes down if the teammate is at another location. In this distributed team setting, enforced team work through a connected paddle still leads to a higher level of measured coordination.

Questioning our attitudes and feelings towards Persuasive Technology PT2019Robby van Delden
The document discusses a study that examined people's attitudes and feelings towards different labels for persuasive technology systems. The study presented descriptions of two systems using different labels (system, persuasive technology, behavior change support system, digital behavior change intervention) and measured perceptions. The results found no significant differences in attitudes based on label. However, labels did influence perceptions of how captivating or forceful the systems seemed, with "digital behavior change intervention" seen as more captivating than "system" and "persuasive technology" seen as more forceful than the other labels. The discussion notes limitations but suggests terminology and explanations are important factors that influence perceptions of persuasive technologies.
Presentation at ECGBL2018,
"In this position paper we share our view on learning sport specific movements using interactive technology. We build upon our experience with playful and embodied technology for HCI, and link our views to related work from a sport-related and non-sport related view. Aiming to bring these together in new future research on learning sport specific movement, this brings us to address our view on five main points in this paper. One, as the most obvious, the end-user should give input as often as fitting. Two, within this new domain there are different types of contributions focusing on technology, interaction, and context, where each brings its own benefits. Three, to make use of the power of entertainment computing (e.g., gamification) entails more than just “adding points as rewards”. Four, one can view new technology in relation to the trainer, ranging from a tool in the hands of the active trainer to a 24/7 available independent “stand-in” for a trainer (being configured and controlled by the trainer); this relation should be taken into account in design and research. Five, technology can of course solve problems (while leaving the core of sports training unchanged), but in order to really transform the domain and fundamentally change sports training practice we need to consider that “potential for change” is different from “actually achieving a useful system in-context”; how technology fits the real world and what it actually benefits is not known beforehand. We conclude the paper with an outlook on our research and design activities in the near future, through educational projects as well as research projects." A Thing of Beauty: Steering behavior in an interactive playgroundRobby van Delden
Full paper presentation at CHI'17.
Interactive playgrounds are spaces where players engage in collocated, playful activities, in which added digital technology
can be designed to promote cognitive, social, and motor skills development. To promote such development, different strategies can be used to implement game mechanics that change player’s in-game behavior. One of such strategies is enticing players to take action through incentives akin to game achievements. We explored if this strategy could be used to influence players’ proxemic behavior in the Interactive Tag Playground, an installation that enhances the traditional game of tag. We placed the ITP in an art gallery, observed hundreds of play sessions, and refined the mechanics, which consisted in projecting collectible particles around the tagger that upon collection by runners resulted only in the embellishment of their circles. We implemented the refined mechanics in a study with 48 children. The playground automatically collected the players’ positions, and analyses show that runners got closer to and moved more towards taggers when using our enticing strategy. This suggests an enticing strategy can be used to influence physical in-game behavior.
A presentation on a small starting research project, done together with MST (hospital), BMS group (UT). We propose the concept of letting children move during the day (tracked by fitbits) and motivating them by rewarding them in an interactive playground with additional features and games.

Ace2013 meaning in life as a source of entertainment - webversionRobby van Delden
Presentation given at Advance in Computer Entertainment 2013 in Bad Boekelo, near Enschede. Hosted this year by University of Twente. It is a presentation on the short paper accepted at ACE: meaning in life as a source of entertainment. Our main point is to wonder why and use human needs, including the humanistic view, to readdress and assess impact of choices in research, and design. This might can be used as source for new entertainment.
