3. FATHER OF GENETICS
1.The principle of segregation
2.The principle of independent assortment
4. The seven traits that Mendel studied in ‘peas’
Recessive
Dominant Expression:
Trait: Expression:
1. Form of ripe seed Smooth Wrinkled
2. Color of seed albumen Yellow Green
3. Color of seed coat Grey White
4. Form of ripe pods Inflated Constricted
5. Color of unripe pods Green Yellow
6. Position of flowers Axial Terminal
7. Length of stem Tall Dwarf
5. Segregation:
for any particular trait, the pair of alleles of each parent separate and
only one allele passes from each parent on to the offspring.
This is segregation of alleles occuring during the process of sex cell
formation (meiosis)
Independent assortment:
Different pairs of alleles are passed to offsprings independently of
each other. The result is that new combinations of genes present in
neither parent are possible.
