Nurses with experience and specialty skills are in demand. Also computers and advanced technology
continues to evolve and it is important that nurses are offered more classes to make them more
knowledgeable in these fields. More than half nursing care will eventually be provided outside of
the hospital. Nurses need to be offered more educational programs to keep them up to date on care
they will be expected to know outside of the hospital. All nurses should be encouraged to pursue

all staff meetings that everyone has the opportunity of becoming a leader. Nurse leaders are out
spoken, move others in the appropriate direction, and are usually called upon by other practicing
nurses. A manager on the other hand, identifies problems and has the ability to lead and manage
through difficult times. They also provide creative solutions, require control and use resources

Public health education is a fundamental source to implement programs to improve, prevent and
control diseases and several medical conditions in the community. My passion for public health did
not happen in a single instance; it accumulated gradually, during several life events. I have faced
many incidents that made me choose public health as a career. As a new medical student at Baghdad
Medical College, I was inspired by a sorrowful and an unforgettable incident that led me closer to
this specialty. A very dear friend of mine, had been a victim of poor chlorination and sanitation in
Iraq. Due to poor infection control, he suffered from cholera epidemic, leading to severe

changing. Health professionals recognize that to promote healthy behaviors, they are challenging in

(McQueen). This leads to medical and sociological term known as "illness behavior." This is a
process of responding to symptoms and deciding whether to seek diagnosis and treatment. The
illness behavior model suggests that people are more likely to seek medical care if: "their symptoms

alternative explanations for their symptoms; their families and friends generally trust doctors and

Staffing may be expressed as the number of staff members required for providing care to a particular
number of patients, or it can describe the way in which human resources are used in a particular

consists of the reduction of disease, injuries, and disabilities that are related to interactions between

paramount to increasing quality of and length of life. Globally, 23 percent of all deaths are due to
preventable environmental factors (Healthypeople.gov, 2017). Thus, environmental factors consist
of a variety of subject areas such as: exposure to hazardous substances, natural and technological
disasters, climate change, and occupational hazards (Healthypeople.gov, 2017). Hence,
environmental health must address societal and environmental concerns that increase the exposure
and or likelihood of disease. My practicum experience mainly involved the environmental health
aspect of the public health umbrella. The experiences obtained consisted of behind the scenes work,
surveillance, inspections, sampling and monitoring of various entities and procedures related to
ensuring good public health. Two key areas that I found myself to be particularly interested in are
surface and groundwater as well as infrastructure surveillance.

When people grow up in a smoking household, they are exposed to secondhand smoke (WHO,
2016). Secondhand smoke can also affect health outside of the home, as over 90 percent of the
world's population does not have full coverage on smoke–free public health actions. Second hand

A study was conducted using members of the Medical Library Association (MLA) and groups of
environmental health consultants to the National Library of Medicine (NLM), following a report by
the Institute of Medicine (IOM). In the report the IOM defined health literacy as ''the degree to
which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and
services needed to make appropriate health decisions'' (Logan). The IOM reported that health
literacy is major problem facing the nation and that even well–educated Americans have pressing
issues with certain aspects of the health system. These issues include problems with understanding
medical terms, prescription information, and even problems traveling around hospitals and medical
centers. The IOM concluded that improving health literacy in the United States is one of the most
pressing health policy issues. This conclusion sparked a large amount of discussion throughout the
academic literature and some mailing lists for health professionals.
Due to the amount of responses following the IOM report, a study was created to explore attitudes
about health literacy and help discover ways to improve it, using Q methodology. Q methodology
helps researchers learn how opinions are structured and whether or not they fall into predetermined

The importance of environmental health With a population of 6.8 billion and growing at a rate of
about 75 million per year, it is important we have a safe environment to live in. "Every time we
venture beyond the boundaries of our everyday world, whether traveling to a less–developed
country or camping in a wilderness area, we are reminded of the importance of these basics: clean
water, sanitary waste disposal, safe food, and insect and rodent control" (Core Concepts 572).
Elements that we survive on and that are being polluted are our air and water quality. As well as our
solid waste, chemical, radiation, and noise pollution having a detrimental effect on the world we live
in. Our surrounds directly affect our personal health and we affect what surrounds us, so improving
what we can is the most important responsibility we have. Environmental health is "the collective
interactions of humans with the environment and the short–term and long–term health consequences
of those interactions" (Core Concepts 572). Environmental pollutants contribute to infectious and
chronic diseases and the growing population and technological advances are increasing the damage
on the environment. The large population is a key factor in chemical pollution, global warming, and
