French advertising is highly regulated to protect consumers and emphasize cultural values like romance and humor over product functions. Regulations include restricting alcohol and phone ads targeting children, requiring the French language be used, and banning false claims. The BVP reviews all TV ads and investigates complaints. French ads aim to seduce viewers through spectacle, love, and humor. While TV ads are limited, online ads are growing as brands create content for sites like Nowness and mobile apps like Net-A-Porter's. Outdoor ads are now smaller and further apart due to new laws.

Reference at the Metcalf 2018: Digging into data visualisationARDC
This document discusses data visualization and provides tips for creating effective visualizations. It defines visualization as using graphics to help understand information. Effective visualizations (1) show the data clearly, (2) induce thoughtful analysis of the content rather than just the presentation, and (3) reveal patterns and insights. Good techniques include using natural mappings, highlighting key points, enabling clear comparisons, and employing consistent conventions. Color should only be used if it adds meaning. The document recommends several tools for creating visualizations and references for developing related skills.
Interactive dashboards allow for more user interaction than simple dashboards through features like navigation, drill-down capabilities, filtering, and different display formats. They are useful for handling large volumes of data and providing insights not obvious before. Effective dashboards are designed based on use cases, group data logically, avoid overload, and consider reporting and decision-making cycles. A case study demonstrated a national project monitoring dashboard that standardized data feeds and had an intuitive interface for different user groups. Choosing the right platform depends on desired features like mobile access, social integration, and traditional or free-form analysis. Dashboards have applications in real estate, transportation, facilities management, and smart cities.
Dashboards are Dumb Data - Why Smart Analytics Will Kill Your KPIsLuciano Pesci, PhD
Organizations of every size have access to data dashboard technology, yet none of the solutions have delivered on their hype and right now across the world executives and analysts are staring at a dashboard and thinking the same thing, ""so what?""
The failure of dashboards to deliver meaningful insights is inherent in their simplicity: they only show surface level information, and not the relationships between data points that really drive the fate of your organization.
But all is not lost! By combining the right mix of technology and human expertise in business strategy, research and data mining you can embrace the smart analytics movement, and start accessing insights that grow your company and your competitive position.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
[OReilly Superstream] Occupy the Space: A grassroots guide to engineering (an...Jason Yip
The typical problem in product engineering is not bad strategy, so much as “no strategy”. This leads to confusion, lack of motivation, and incoherent action. The next time you look for a strategy and find an empty space, instead of waiting for it to be filled, I will show you how to fill it in yourself. If you’re wrong, it forces a correction. If you’re right, it helps create focus. I’ll share how I’ve approached this in the past, both what works and lessons for what didn’t work so well.
Digital Banking in the Cloud: How Citizens Bank Unlocked Their MainframePrecisely
Inconsistent user experience and siloed data, high costs, and changing customer expectations – Citizens Bank was experiencing these challenges while it was attempting to deliver a superior digital banking experience for its clients. Its core banking applications run on the mainframe and Citizens was using legacy utilities to get the critical mainframe data to feed customer-facing channels, like call centers, web, and mobile. Ultimately, this led to higher operating costs (MIPS), delayed response times, and longer time to market.
Ever-changing customer expectations demand more modern digital experiences, and the bank needed to find a solution that could provide real-time data to its customer channels with low latency and operating costs. Join this session to learn how Citizens is leveraging Precisely to replicate mainframe data to its customer channels and deliver on their “modern digital bank” experiences.

Data Rich, Information Poor (D.R.I.P.)
5. Challenges
• Saving time from manual report building processes to near real-
time dashboards (business intelligence)
• Saving labor (IT) from manual report building to dashboards
• Moving from data collection to insights (analyze)
• Moving from insights to decisions (decide)
• Moving from decisions to actions (act)
Bottom line: Insight deficit, trustworthy data, time
delays, decision-making, and speed in taking action.
So, how do we build dashboards to enable the above?
9. • Optimize business processes
• Greater visibility into the business
• Identify potential training opportunities
• Enable better decision-making
• Measure and record performance, KPI’s and

14. Purpose of Dashboard
“A dashboard is a visual display of the most important information needed to
achieve one or more objectives, consolidated and arranged on a single screen
so the information can be monitored at a glance.”
- Visual information
- Achieve objectives
- Single screen
- Quickly monitored

17. Thirteen Don’ts from author Stephen Few
• Exceeding the boundaries of a single screen
• Supplying inadequate context for the data
• Displaying excessive detail or precision
• Choosing inappropriate display media
• Introducing meaningless variety
• Using poorly designed display media
• Encoding quantitative data inaccurately
18. • Arranging the data poorly
• Highlighting important data ineffectively or not at all
• Cluttering the display with useless decoration
• Misusing or overusing color
• Designing an unattractive visual display
• Consider your audience
• Simplify, simplify, simplify!
• Use MAD model (Monitor, Analyze, Drill-down) principles

Editor's Notes
Very cool tag cloud of BI/Information visualization termsWhen you look at a tag cloud, what is it communicating?
Moving away from HiPPO—the highest-paidperson’sopinion to data-driven analytics based decision-makingIt used to be that dashboards were primarily for the EIM (Executive rooms) but now are being pushed to all levels of a company
Moving to self-serve, enabling people to measure themselves, and enabling or driving data-driven decisions
Collapsing the distance between the circles is an important objective for companies
Transparency, decision-making, corrective actions before emergency / crisis
As IT/Data/Business practitioners we need to maximize the value for the dashboard consumers
