Information management in	MSF
MSF	Charter
• Médecins Sans	Frontières is	a	private	international
association	that	provides	assistance	to	populations	in
distress,	to	victims	of	natural	or	man-made	disasters	and
to	victims	of	armed	conflict.	They	do	so	irrespective	of
race,	religion,	creed	or	political	convictions.
How are	we organised
• The	MSF	Movement
• MSF	associations
• Operational	structure
• Where	are	we	working?
• 256	projects	in	Africa
• 81	projects	in	Asia
• 44	projects	in	Middle	East
• 38	projects	in	Europe
• 5	projects	in	Pacific
Complexity
• As	you	can	see	MSF	is	a	complex	organization,	also	in
terms	of	information	management.
• There	is	a	huge	amount	of	information	repository.	In	a
mapping	we	did	last	year	we	identified	75	different
information	repositories.
• Standardization	and	coherence	is	a	long	term	objective.

Problem: provide/distribute	relevant,	updated	information
Context: limited	connectivity	in	time	and	bandwidth,	location,	etc

Headquarters
The	case	of	the	International	office,	the	“Pamoja”	project
• The	reasons	for	Pamoja
• Objectives	of	the	project:
– Provide	a	unique	repository	for	all	International	Office documents.
– Provide	an	IO	wide	communication	channel.
– Support	straightforward	communication	with	the	whole	Movement
– Enable	the	creation	of	virtual	collaborative	spaces	where	information
can	be	shared	in	the	context	of	operational	processes.
– Collaborative	workspaces	must	have	the	potential	to	support
business	processes	and	not	only	be	document	libraries.
The three stages
• Stage	1
– The	first	stage	focuses	on	the	common	areas	to	all	users.
Together	with	the	development	of	the	new	site	elements	there
will	be	some	training	sessions	for	the	Champions	network	and	the
rest	of	the	users.
• Stage	2
– The	second	stage	will	start	after	Stage	1	release. Following	the
Agile	principles	it	this	developments	will	be	organized	as	a	series
of	small	sprints.
• Stage	3
– The	third	stage	will	be	similar	to	the	second	but	opening	the	site
to	other	users	from	outside	the	International	Office.
• The	platform
development	will	be
done	in	three	Phases:
