Information for Admissions
The Unified Media Lab (UML) is designed to support the Unified Media model of
multimedia, cross-platform media education. Freshmen and sophomores use the lab for
media skills classes, and juniors and seniors participating in immersion classes staff the
newsroom alongside student media members. UML contains many spaces and resources to
enable students to effectively and efficiently work alongside one another. Spaces and
resources include:
• Large & Small Conference Rooms
• Classroom space for up to 20 students
• Faculty Offices
• iMac Stations
• Editor Stations
• AVID Stations
• State-of-the-art broadcast studio with auxiliary control room
Student media organizations are co-housed in the facility, allowing for easy collaboration
and coordination around breaking news and enterprising assignments. Organizations
include:
• NewsLink Indiana is a 30-minute newscast airing live, four nights per week, not
only on campus but throughout Delaware County. The Emmy Award-winning,
student-produced newscast is the Muncie area's only television news report.
• The Daily News is a four-day-a-week student-directed newspaper. Its 90-year
history makes it the longest standing student media organization on campus. It
consistently wins top national awards from major student media organizations,
including Columbia Scholastic Press Association, Associated Collegiate Press, and
Society of Professional Journalists.
• Ball Bearings is the campus magazine and BallBearingsMag.com is its interactive
website. This high-caliber, glossy magazine publishes a print edition twice a
year and is home to long-form writing and outstanding photography. Students at
Ball Bearings become experts in magazine design and are responsible for a
companion tablet publication as well as original online multimedia stories that are
published each week.
UML features two other spaces housed just feet away from the main lab.
• The Holden Strategic Communications Center is home to Cardinal
Communications, a student-run public relations and creative communications
agency and the American Advertising Federation (AAF) student chapter. This
space contains an open studio, conference room, library and break room, as well as
office space for public relations and advertising students.
• The Advertising Sales and Creative Suite is where student sales executives practice
campaign strategies, a sales pitch and learn to close the deal. Students use
customer results. Graphic design specialists use Adobe InDesign/Photoshop to
create dynamic advertising in print and digital platforms.
