INTRODUCTION
Computer can’t understand our language.
It only understand machine language that can be done by
using some devices
DEFINITION
“ The instructions and data that are inserted is called “input”.
The devices that are used to input the data is called “ INPUT
DEVICES”
“ An input device Is a computer device or hardware that allow
the user to provide data instructions and input to the computer
system” .
INPUT DEVICES OF COMPUTER
Some widely used input devices of computer are :
1. Pointing Devices
2. Audio visual devices
3. Game controller
4. Scanner and reading devices
MOUSE
• First computer mouse is invented in 1964.
• Commonly used pointing device that fits
comfortably under the palm of your hand.
• Consist of :
Two buttons (left and right)
Scroll wheel
• With a mouse, user control the position of the
pointer on the computer screen.
• Connected with the desktop and laptop.
KEYBOARD
• Invented in 1867
• “A keyboard is the set of typewriter-
like keys that enables you to enter data
into computer and other devices.”
• Consists of keys :
Alphabetic keys
Numeric keys
. Punctuation keys
. Special keys
• Used for typing
• Used with desktop and laptop
TOUCHPAD
• Invented in 1982
• Small, flat rectangular pointing
device
• Sensitive to pressure and motion.
• An input device that found on
“Notebook computer”
• It allowing users to control the
cursor on the screen by moving
their fingers over the pad.
TOUCH SCREEN
• Inception in 1965 and
adoption in 1980’s.
• Can be input and output
• Use fingers or stylus
• Icons on the screen represent
buttons
• Used in ATM, PDAs and
Mobiles
• Advantages : 1. Faster entry
of options. 2 . Easier for
people to use
LIGHT PEN
• Invented in 1955
• Quite old technology
• Can be used as alternative to mice,touch
screen and graphics tablets.
• Contain sensor that send signals to the
computer whenever light changes are detected.
• only works on CRT monitors
• Used in selecting and drawing objects on CRT
screens.
• Advantages: 1. Small and easy to use
2. More accurate than touch screen
TRACKBALL
• Stationery pointing device
• Contains a ball on its top or side
• To move the pointer using the
trackball, you rotate the ball
with your finger,thumb or by
palm of your hand.
• Consist of One or more buttons
that work just like mouse button.
DIGITAL PEN
• Slightly larger than the stylus
• Avaliable in Two forms
•Some are pressure sensitive
. •others have built-in
digital camera
• Tablets PC’s use pressure
sensitive digital pen.

• Audio visual devices consist of:
1. Audio Input
2. Web Cam

AUDIO INPUT
“Audio input is the process of entering any
type of sound into computer”
For example: 1. Speech 2. Music
3. Sound effects
• User enter sound into computer by using
devices such as microphone and tape
players.
• Some user enter sound into computer by
using electronic Piano keyboard.
WEB CAM
• Invented in 1993
• Smaller than video camera
• Digital camera that is connected to the
computer
• It can send live pictures by means of
intenet
• Uses : 1. Chatting online
2. Enable video conferencing
Allow people to keep in contact with each
other.
MICROPHONE
• Invented in 1877
• Can be used to input sound
• Connected directly to the computer
• Sounds converted from electrical Analogue
signal Into digital signal.
GRAPHICS TABLETS
• Invented in 1957
• Hand written images
• Resulting image appear on the
computer monitor for further use
• USES: 1. Computer graphics
2. Computer aided design
• Drawing are input rather than letters
as happens with scanner.
DIGITAL CAMERA
• Invented in 1975
• Used like traditional camera
• Photographs can be deleted if they are
not good.
• Also can be retaken.
• Can be connected directly to the
computer
• Has capacity to store many photographs.
• Can also take short video
• Used by personal Photography.
GAME
CONTROLLER
• Video games and computer games use Game
Controller.
“ An input device that directs movement and Action
of on- screen object .
• Games controller Includes
1.Game pad
2 . Joystick
3. Wheel
Game controller
GAMEPADS
• Held with both hands
• “Control the movement and action of players
in video games.”
• Gamepads communicate with the game
controller or a personal computer Via wired
and wireless technology.
JOYSTICK
Invented in 1967.
• “ An input device is Consisting of a sticks that
pivots on a base and reports it’s angle and
direction to this device it is controlling.
• Used to control video games
• Also know as Control column.
• Consist of one or more push-buttons
WHEELS
• Steering wheel type input device
• Used in driving cars, trucks and
other vehicles.
SCANNER
• Invented in 1957.
• Enter hard copy image
• Can also be used as OCRS
• Flatpad, place the document in
front of glass.
• Light source move underneath
• Use to scan old records
• Scan image for editing
• Allow image to be stored
• Used in faxes
READING DEVICES
• Devices that can capture data directly
from the source document includes
1. Barcode Reader
2. Megnetic strip card reader
3. Chip Reader
BIOMETRIC INPUT
• Invented in late 20th century.
• Use unique biological features such as
1. Fingerprints
2. Facial feature
3. Iris pattern for authentication and
identification
• Used in Security system and access
control.
IMPORTANCE OF
INPUT DEVICES
Input devices are the Critical component of Any
computing system for several reasons:
1. USER COMMUNICATION:Input device facilitates
communication between the user and the computer,
allowing user to input data,execute command and
interact with software application.
2. VERSATILITY: Different input devices cater to various
user preferences and needs, making computing
accessible to diverse range of user.
PRODUCTIVITY: Efficient input devices
enhance productivity by enabling users to
perform task quickly and accurately.
4. SPECIALIZED APPLICATION: Certain input
devices like graphics tablets and barcode
reader are tailored for specific industries,
improving workflow efficiency in those
domain .

3. Combine the data as transaction
DISADVANTAGES
OF INPUT DEVICES
1. They use up desk space as they are quite
large. Like: keyboard
2. People with limited arm-wrist movement
can find difficulty in operating it.

  • 5. INTRODUCTION Computer can’t understand our language. It only understand machine language that can be done by using some devices
  • 6. DEFINITION “ The instructions and data that are inserted is called “input”. The devices that are used to input the data is called “ INPUT DEVICES” “ An input device Is a computer device or hardware that allow the user to provide data instructions and input to the computer system” .

  • 8. INPUT DEVICES OF COMPUTER Some widely used input devices of computer are : 1. Pointing Devices 2. Audio visual devices 3. Game controller 4. Scanner and reading devices

MOUSE • First computer mouse is invented in 1964. • Commonly used pointing device that fits comfortably under the palm of your hand. • Consist of : Two buttons (left and right) Scroll wheel • With a mouse, user control the position of the pointer on the computer screen. • Connected with the desktop and laptop.
  • 12. KEYBOARD • Invented in 1867 • “A keyboard is the set of typewriter- like keys that enables you to enter data into computer and other devices.” • Consists of keys : Alphabetic keys Numeric keys . Punctuation keys . Special keys • Used for typing • Used with desktop and laptop
  • 13. TOUCHPAD • Invented in 1982 • Small, flat rectangular pointing device • Sensitive to pressure and motion. • An input device that found on “Notebook computer” • It allowing users to control the cursor on the screen by moving their fingers over the pad.
  • 14. TOUCH SCREEN • Inception in 1965 and adoption in 1980’s. • Can be input and output • Use fingers or stylus • Icons on the screen represent buttons • Used in ATM, PDAs and Mobiles • Advantages : 1. Faster entry of options. 2 . Easier for people to use

LIGHT PEN • Invented in 1955 • Quite old technology • Can be used as alternative to mice,touch screen and graphics tablets. • Contain sensor that send signals to the computer whenever light changes are detected. • only works on CRT monitors • Used in selecting and drawing objects on CRT screens. • Advantages: 1. Small and easy to use 2. More accurate than touch screen
  • 16. TRACKBALL • Stationery pointing device • Contains a ball on its top or side • To move the pointer using the trackball, you rotate the ball with your finger,thumb or by palm of your hand. • Consist of One or more buttons that work just like mouse button.
  • 17. DIGITAL PEN • Slightly larger than the stylus • Avaliable in Two forms •Some are pressure sensitive . •others have built-in digital camera • Tablets PC’s use pressure sensitive digital pen.
