Did you know modern statistics state that you have 60 seconds or less to capture your audience’s attention?
You’ve might have heard it before, but maybe not in terms of presentations. It’s crucial to understand the importance of grasping an audience’s attention in the first moments of a talk. Your opening lines set the tone for your overall performance, so a great opener will prepare and intrigue the audience and ensure that your message is effectively received.
So, how do you enchant an audience right off the bat?
Here are 5 methods that we have found work the best for beginning a presentation.
If you are like many people, even the thought of delivering a speech in front of an audience will get your palms sweating. The fear of public speaking ranks high among the most common phobias, and for good reason: most of us approach the situation with the wrong mindset, which in turn makes us live out our worst fears in a public forum.
As Michael Parker notes in IT’S NOT WHAT YOU SAY: How to Sell Your Message When It Matters Most (A TarcherPerigee paperback; on sale January 2016), our fixation on the content of our words – and not the presentation of ourselves – is what brings us down. Once the Vice-Chairman of London’s Saatchi & Saatchi, and one of the world’s most experienced advertising pitch men, having made more than 1,000 pitches in his successful career, Parker has learned first-hand that an effective presentation, a job interview, or even a speech at a wedding hinges on our ability to portray ourselves as passionate, relatable, and collected. But, if we are focused on what we say, and not how we act, we will fail to persuade our audience.
Applied in the boardroom, at the pulpit, or even in conversation, these tenets will help you present better in any situation.

It began as a shoe company but expanded into other athletic products. Puma was founded in 1948 by Rudolf Dassler after leaving Adidas and focused on tennis and soccer shoes. Both companies went public on European stock exchanges in the 1990s and 2000s and have expanded their global presence through new stores and sponsorship deals. While they started similarly, Puma now focuses more on fashion and outsourcing production compared to Adidas' model of licensing and in-house manufacturing.
After brothers Adolf and Rudolf Dassler split their shoe company after WWII, founding Adidas and Puma respectively, the two companies engaged in intense competition over the next several decades. Adidas established itself through major sporting events but struggled in the 80s due to failing to keep up with fashion trends. It recovered through repositioning, acquisitions like Reebok, and partnerships. Puma also struggled and nearly went bankrupt in the 90s before turning around under new leadership through restructuring, promoting a lifestyle brand image, and strategic partnerships and acquisitions. In 2007, Puma was acquired by the luxury group PPR, becoming a subsidiary.
