IT Monitoring in the Era of Containers | Luca Deri Founder & Project Lead | ntopInfluxData
Network traffic monitoring tools are traditionally based on the packet paradigm where tools need to analyse each incoming and outgoing packet. As systems are moving towards a micro-service oriented architecture based on containers, the packet paradigm is no longer enough to provide IT visibility as services interact inside a system and not over a network where it is possible to install network sensors. This talk will explain how open source tools designed by ntop on top of InfluxDB allow packet monitoring tools to be complemented with container monitoring and thus implement a lightweight visibility solution for modern IT infrastructures.

Why You Should NOT Be Using an RDBMS for Time-stamped DataDevOps.com
We are always looking for ways to make our solutions work better and smarter. We accomplish this by tracking the performance of each of the components underlying our solution. All this critical performance data has a time stamp and a value - also known as time series data. If this important time-stamped data is at the heart of initiatives to keep things performant, why are we entrusting this data to an ordinary relational database?
In this webinar, Thome Crowe of InfluxData, will review why you should use a Time Series Database (TSDB) for your important Times Series Data and not one of the traditional datastore you may have used in the past. He will discuss how Time Series Databases are built with specific workloads and requirements in mind, including the ability to ingest millions of data points per second; to perform real-time queries across these large data sets in a non-blocking manner; to downsample and evict high-precision low-value data; to optimize data storage to reduce storage costs; and to perform complex time-bound queries to extract meaningful insight from the data. All capabilities you would have to build yourself when using a traditional database.

Why and how to leverage the simplicity and power of SQL on FlinkDataWorks Summit
SQL is the lingua franca of data processing, and everybody working with data knows SQL. Apache Flink provides SQL support for querying and processing batch and streaming data. Flink's SQL support powers large-scale production systems at Alibaba, Huawei, and Uber. Based on Flink SQL, these companies have built systems for their internal users as well as publicly offered services for paying customers.
In our talk, we will discuss why you should and how you can (not being Alibaba or Uber) leverage the simplicity and power of SQL on Flink. We will start exploring the use cases that Flink SQL was designed for and present real-world problems that it can solve. In particular, you will learn why unified batch and stream processing is important and what it means to run SQL queries on streams of data. After we explored why you should use Flink SQL, we will show how you can leverage its full potential.
Since recently, the Flink community is working on a service that integrates a query interface, (external) table catalogs, and result serving functionality for static, appending, and updating result sets. We will discuss the design and feature set of this query service and how it can be used for exploratory batch and streaming queries, ETL pipelines, and live updating query results that serve applications, such as real-time dashboards. The talk concludes with a brief demo of a client running queries against the service.

Application Monitoring using Open Source: VictoriaMetrics - ClickHouseVictoriaMetrics
Monitoring is the key to successful operation of any software service, but commercial solutions are complex, expensive, and slow. Let us show you how to build monitoring that is simple, cost-effective, and fast using open source stacks easily accessible to any developer.
We’ll start with the elements of monitoring systems: data ingest, query engine, visualization, and alerting. We’ll then explain and contrast two implementation approaches. Flink Forward San Francisco 2018: Fabian Hueske & Timo Walther - "Why and how...Flink Forward
SQL is the lingua franca of data processing and everybody working with data knows SQL. Apache Flink provides SQL support for querying and processing batch and streaming data. Flink’s SQL support powers large-scale production systems at Alibaba, Huawei, and Uber.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
