This study examined the effects of teaching English language learners specific academic vocabulary versus general vocabulary. Students who learned academic vocabulary related to science outperformed those who learned more general vocabulary on science assessments. The findings suggest explicitly teaching academic vocabulary can help English language learners comprehend content-area texts and concepts.
