1. HOLLYWOOD:
The glitz, the glamour and the stars. . . Where dreams come to life.
A city in itself,over the years it has lured millions to showcase their talent
and beauty and presentit on the Silver Screento ultimately achieve name,
fame and fortune. Sadly, the name Hollywood and its origins have to this
day remained in dispute. Yet, its magnetic draw lures many hopefuls to
seek their fate in Tinsel Town.
In 1902,H.J. Whitney purchased the original Hollywood area in Los
Angeles from the E.C Hurd ranch, who also coined the name. Movie
productionstarted in 1910 with the short film In Old California. In 1912,the
first Hollywood movie studio started called the Nestor Motion Picture
Company, followed by four major film companies-Paramount, Columbia,
Warner Bros. and RKO.Their films impressed audiences worldwide. By
1920,Hollywood was already a world-famous household name for movie
studios and lovers of the silver screen.
In addition to these, the other major film studios in North American,
Western,and global markets are Walt Disney Pictures, Universal Pictures,
Columbia Pictures, 20th Century Fox and Paramount Picture. They are the
six diversified mediafirms whose various film productionand distribution
command approximately 90 percentof U.S. and Canadian box office
revenue.
Over the last 4 decades,the studio has grown and have relocated to other
Los Angeles areas. Every Hollywood movie is unique in its own way, but
the aim of all is to provide pure entertainment to its audience. Over the
years the movies have been grouped into 6 categories based on their
genres.The main film genres are:
Action: Non-stop motion with high energy and physical stunts.
Adventure: Exciting stories with new inventions and experiences.
Drama: Serious movies,plot driven, portraying real stories and characters.
Comedy:To make people laugh using light hearted plots
2. Musicals/Dance: Feet-tapping,musically enlightening, these movies centre
on combinations of music, dance and songs.
Historical: based on historical events of the past.
Horror: frightening and macabre, invoking our hidden fears.
Science-fiction:Creativity at its best, these movies are visionary,
unleashing the imagination to present impossible journeys and
unbelievable settings.
To cater these genres,ancillary industries such as film editing, post-
production, props and lighting companies have been set up to enhance film
effects and the overall audience entertainment experience.
Hollywood is also noted for its famous Walk of Fame that honours stars
who have contributed to the Silver Screenand the overall entertainment
industry. The Walk continues to grow and has more than 2500 stars
embeddedon the sidewalks.
