WHAT IS INDUSTRIAL
POLICY?
The industrial policy of a country, sometimes denoted
IP, is its official strategic effort to encourage the
development and growth of part or all of the
manufacturing sector as well as other sectors of the
economy. The government takes measures “aimed at
improving the competitiveness and capabilities of
domestic firms and promoting structural
transformation”. A country’s infrastructure
(transportation, telecommunications and energy
industry) is a major part of the manufacturing sector
that often has a key role in IP.
KEY OUTCOMES OF THE
INDUSTRIAL POLICY
RESOLUTION-1956
 Scope of the public sector in India got
widened.
 The government’s aim to achieve a
socialistic pattern of growth was reiterated.
 A clear cut classification of industries was
done in India for the first time.
 Provision of compulsory licensing was
cemented.
 The policy paved the way of development of
public sector in India.
MAIN OBJECTIVES :
 To accelerate the rate of growth and
speed up industrialization.
 To develop heavy industries and
machine making units.
 To expand public sector.
 To reduce disparities in income and
wealth.
 To build up a large growing cooperative
sector.
MAIN FEATURES :
 New classification of industries
• Monopoly of the state.
• Mixed sector of public and private
enterprise.
• Industries left for private sector.
 Mutual dependence of public and
private sectors.
 Assistant and control of private sector.
 Reduction of regional disparities.
CATEGORIZATION OF
INDUSTRIES :
 Set of industries the future
development of which will be the
exclusive responsibility of the state.
 Category of industries which will be
progressively state-owned and in
which the state will, therefore,
generally take the initiative in
establishing new undertakings.

 Schedule A.
 Schedule B.
 Schedule C.
 Schedule A : which contained 17 industries. All
new units in these industries, such where their
establishment in private sector has ready been
approved, would be set up only be the state.
 Schedule B : which contained 12 industries,
such industries would be progressively state
owned.
 Schedule C : All remaining industries fell in
this category; the future development of these
industries had been left to the initiative and
enterprise of the private sector.
CONCLUSION :
The industrial policy 1956 thus
provided a comprehensive framework
for industrial development in India.
However, this policy has been
criticised on the grounds that by
enormously expanding the field of
public sector it had drastically
reduced the area of activity for the
private sector.

  • 3. WHAT IS INDUSTRIAL POLICY? The industrial policy of a country, sometimes denoted IP, is its official strategic effort to encourage the development and growth of part or all of the manufacturing sector as well as other sectors of the economy. The government takes measures “aimed at improving the competitiveness and capabilities of domestic firms and promoting structural transformation”. A country’s infrastructure (transportation, telecommunications and energy industry) is a major part of the manufacturing sector that often has a key role in IP.
  • 4. KEY OUTCOMES OF THE INDUSTRIAL POLICY RESOLUTION-1956  Scope of the public sector in India got widened.  The government’s aim to achieve a socialistic pattern of growth was reiterated.  A clear cut classification of industries was done in India for the first time.  Provision of compulsory licensing was cemented.  The policy paved the way of development of public sector in India.
  • 5. MAIN OBJECTIVES :  To accelerate the rate of growth and speed up industrialization.  To develop heavy industries and machine making units.  To expand public sector.  To reduce disparities in income and wealth.  To build up a large growing cooperative sector.
  • 6. MAIN FEATURES :  New classification of industries • Monopoly of the state. • Mixed sector of public and private enterprise. • Industries left for private sector.  Mutual dependence of public and private sectors.  Assistant and control of private sector.  Reduction of regional disparities.
  • 7. CATEGORIZATION OF INDUSTRIES :  Set of industries the future development of which will be the exclusive responsibility of the state.  Category of industries which will be progressively state-owned and in which the state will, therefore, generally take the initiative in establishing new undertakings.
  • 8. ADVERTISEMENT S :  Schedule A.  Schedule B.  Schedule C.
  • 9.  Schedule A : which contained 17 industries. All new units in these industries, such where their establishment in private sector has ready been approved, would be set up only be the state.  Schedule B : which contained 12 industries, such industries would be progressively state owned.  Schedule C : All remaining industries fell in this category; the future development of these industries had been left to the initiative and enterprise of the private sector.
  • 10. CONCLUSION : The industrial policy 1956 thus provided a comprehensive framework for industrial development in India. However, this policy has been criticised on the grounds that by enormously expanding the field of public sector it had drastically reduced the area of activity for the private sector.
