In his lean-to hut, the fisherman persuades the man to have sex with his daughter, as he must leave and the daughter is alone. The man hesitates, feeling guilty, but also understands the physical hunger the two endure that drives such an act. The daughter is malnourished but obediently opens herself, showing the dehumanizing effects of prolonged poverty. The poem illustrates how hunger can compromise one's morality and humanity.
