Community College Online Class Size Optimization: Current Research and FindingsJoshua Murdock
With the increasing demands for online classes as well as cost-cutting measures, many institutions look at raising online course caps. How might this impact learning?
In our community college, there is an increasing demand not only for online courses, but for online programs. At the same time that we are struggling with quality assurance of our online educational experiences, we battle with state funding limitations. Put these two factors together and the natural questions emerge: Could focusing efforts on offering larger online classes solve our problems? How might larger online classes impact learning? We will present preliminary findings based on existing research, interviews with staff at peer colleges, surveys of division deans, and both formal and informal discussions with online faculty and staff. Data will be drawn from multiple resources including the Instructional Technology Council, blogs about online course sizes, current literature, and social networking sites. Session Goals: After the session, each participant will be able to 1. Identify important factors that should be considered when choosing caps for online courses. 2. Locate and utilize resources to further the study of online class size optimization.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Synthetic Fiber Construction in lab .pptxPavel ( NSTU)
Synthetic fiber production is a fascinating and complex field that blends chemistry, engineering, and environmental science. By understanding these aspects, students can gain a comprehensive view of synthetic fiber production, its impact on society and the environment, and the potential for future innovations. Synthetic fibers play a crucial role in modern society, impacting various aspects of daily life, industry, and the environment. ynthetic fibers are integral to modern life, offering a range of benefits from cost-effectiveness and versatility to innovative applications and performance characteristics. While they pose environmental challenges, ongoing research and development aim to create more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Understanding the importance of synthetic fibers helps in appreciating their role in the economy, industry, and daily life, while also emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and innovation.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Graduate 600 to 800 students a year
Provide three pathways to diploma
Have a English Learner re designation rate of 36%
30% of our students are concurrently enrolled in college
SBAC Results were 38% of students at proficiency in Language
Arts
96% of students complete online classes with a C or better (
National average 30%)
4. What is independent
study?
It is a alternative method of instruction.
Students compete their classes through completion of
homework (20-30 hours)
Secondary students complete 6 to 8 classes a semester.
It is an A through G, comprehensive program. IT is not credit
recovery or remediation.
Students can complete instruction through pen and paper,
online or both.
5. Student profile
Students that can not attend 5 days a week, 6 hours a day at
their regular school program due to “outside obligations.”
Students that can do classroom work, but need highly
individualized support.
Students that have been victimized and need time to heal.
Students who have agoraphobic behaviors.
Students that are highly gifted and need individualized
instruction.
6. Independent Study
vs
Home Instruction
Independent Study
Credentialed teacher instructs student.
Program is WASC accredited
Instruction and content meet state education standards and is reviewed and audited.
Student issued diploma that is accepted with public and private universities
Home Instruction
Parent or tutor teaches student
Home instruction is approved by state.
Instruction and content determined by parent.
Graduated by parents and often only private universities recognize “diploma.”
7. Online Programs
District
District reviews and approves online content and providers
The content providers must have content that is approved by UCOP.
Students receive credit and diploma as any other student.
Charter
School or organization contracts with online content and providers.
No guarantees that the content is approved by UCOP
Student may not be able to transfer credit beyond Charter School if school is not accredited.
Diploma can e issued by Charter organization.
Private
Often use Khan Academy and or their own curriculum that are not approved by UCOP.
Student is not able to transfer credit beyond private school.
Diploma can be issued by private school.
10. Drop Out Profile
The majority of urban dropouts are not “push-outs.”
They no longer can attend in seat programs due to:
Taking care of sick parent or family member.
Taking care of school age siblings so parents
can work
Working shadow economy job to bring
additional income into family.
11. Drop Out Recovery Model
Independent study allows child to fulfill family
responsibilities and continue their education.
Online programs can assist students working
during school hours as they can access
classes 24/7.
Teachers can meet child at workplace or
home
12. Independent Study Best Practices
From Association for Distance Education and Independent
Learning:
Students meet face to face for supportive instruction daily to
weekly based upon student need.
Instructional guides or course syllabi are required with grading
rubrics and textbooks or instructional materials.
Testing is done to ensure measurement of learning outcomes
and mastery of course content.
Feedback is provided continuously to student
13. Online Instruction Best Practices
Botcher 2013, Designing for Learning:
Be present with each course through communication tools
Create dialogue that is balanced through communication tools.
Set clear expectations, and more than finishing class
Get feedback from students early in course.
Focus on content resources, applications and link to support.
Never issue partial credit.
14. Independent Study and Online
Intensive Case Management
Australian Outback Education Program:
Constant monitoring of produced student work
Discussing with student how it is going.
Making adjustments in assignment load to
prevent fatigue and burn out.
Talk, email and text, and when to do each.
15. Closing thoughts
Independent study and online content can increase
access and increase increase personalization.
There are downsides to this form of instruction.
These must be considered.
While not for every student, it is a viable
instructional program for many students, when
using best practices.
