The Khilafat Movement was launched by Muslims in 1919 to influence the British and protect the Ottoman Empire after World War I. Gandhi saw it as an opportunity for Hindu-Muslim unity and suggested non-cooperation until British wrongs were addressed. This led to the non-cooperation movement of 1920-1922, which included boycotts of British institutions. Violence at Chauri Chaura caused Gandhi to suspend the movement. The Muslim League later demanded an autonomous Muslim state, leading to the two-nation theory and the 1940 Lahore Resolution calling for separate Muslim homelands. This increased tensions and the demand for a separate Pakistan.
