In Mumbai, there is a shortage of corneas for transplants each year, as only 800-1000 corneas are received when 5000 are required. This is due to a lack of awareness that corneas must be removed within 6 hours of death to be usable. A group of students raised funds and performed skits to educate the public about eye donation and the importance of timely removal and preservation of corneas. They donated the funds raised to an eye bank hospital to help cover the costs of providing corneas to those in need. Their efforts successfully inspired many people to pledge to donate their eyes after death.

• We thought we could raise awareness
amongst the public for this.

6. • We found out that K.B.H Bachooali Hospital,
an eye bank and research centre is a non-
profit organisation.
• Every year they provide 500 to 600 cornea to
the underprivileged people.
• Expenses incurred for one cornea is around
Rs. 6000, but they charge only Rs. 1000.

7. • We thought with their help we could get
some knowledge that could be used to raise
awareness, as also we wanted to help the eye
bank in the best way we could!

13. We also contributed our pocket money and raised
total funds of Rs. 12,300 and donated it to the Eye
Bank and Research Centre at K.B.H Bachooali
Hospital.

are in need of eyes. Knowing that it was a
non-profit organisation, we wanted to
donate the raised funds to that hospital.
